I will always advocate for raising children who can speak without fear, ask questions without hesitation, and express their feelings without worrying about being punished for it. And when I say children should be able to speak without fear, I don’t mean allowing them to be disrespectful or do whatever they want. I mean giving them the confidence to hold a conversation with you, express their grievances, tell you when something is wrong, and trust that you will listen before you react. I want children to know that no matter what happens, no matter how difficult or embarrassing the situation might be, they can always come home and talk to their parents. Because whether we want to admit it or not, there are people who prey on children. People who take advantage of their innocence, manipulate their emotions, and use their fear of punishment to threaten them into silence. Some children are going through things they desperately want to talk about but cannot, because they are more afraid of their parents’ reactions than the people hurting them. Children have emotions, too. They experience fear, shame, confusion, sadness, and anxiety. The difference is that they are still learning how to understand those emotions, process them, and find the words to express what they are going through. Sometimes, all they need is a parent who will sit down, listen, and make them feel safe enough to speak. Life is already hard. The world can be cruel, people can be unkind, and children will inevitably encounter situations they don’t know how to handle. They need guidance, patience, reassurance, and a place where they can take off the emotional armour they have been forced to wear outside. Please, resist the urge to call your children liars. It is not okay to dismiss everything they say simply because they are children. Yes, children lie sometimes. They make mistakes, do things they know they shouldn’t do, and sometimes lie about them because they are terrified of the consequences. But there is a difference between correcting a child for lying about breaking a plate and creating an environment where that child is too afraid to tell you that someone is hurting them. Don’t make hitting them your first response to every mistake. Don’t make shouting the answer to every question. Don’t make them regret opening up to you. Because the day your child learns that telling you the truth comes with humiliation, anger, or violence, they may stop telling you the truth. And when they stop talking to you, you may never know what they are going through. Yes, you grew up without the emotional support of your parents, but weren’t there countless moments when you wished you had that support? Weren’t there times when you desperately needed someone to listen to you, understand you, reassure you, and make you feel safe? Didn’t you ever promise yourself that when you had children of your own, you would be the parent you desperately needed growing up? And please, remember this: children are not responsible for having the emotional maturity of adults. They are learning. They are growing. They are figuring things out one day at a time. Our job is not to make them afraid of getting life wrong. Our job is to guide them, protect them, teach them, and give them the confidence to come to us when life gets too difficult to handle alone.
