Mental Models
Identify and challenge assumptions and habitual ways of thinking that influence behaviors.
Club Examples
▪️“Winning is the best metric for development.”
▪️ “Traditional technical drills produce better players.”
When we question assumptions and are open to change, learning emerges.

Intelligent Operating System
A club's competitive advantage is not merely the quality of its players, facilities or coaches.
It is the quality of the methodology and system that helps all of them learn together.

The Club That Learns Wins Twice
A club that wins a match celebrates a result.
A club that learns from the experience improves its future.
What worked? What didn’t? What did the players discover? What must the coaches change?
Learning organizations turn experience into improvement.
The real victory is becoming better at getting better.

Too many trainings are poor drills implemented by good people.
Too few coaches have experience in learning design and pedagogy. Why would they?
And yet, the coach is 100% responsible for designing a learning environment based upon effective protocols.

“The _______ Way.”
I read the websites of youth soccer conglomerates in the USA.
Filled with good people with good intentions. Sincerely good hearted leaders and I respect many.
Their websites speak to…
Coach education, instructional alignment, dynamic training, a core curriculum to develop intelligent and skillful players, etc.
And then…
I watch a training.
Reality so far from ideaology.
Nothing on a website or handbook matters if a child does not receive dynamic and engaging learning experience.
Far too many trainings are bad drills implementrd by good people.
All clubs websites look the same, but the club’s daily execution belie the website commitment to the child’s learning.
Most club’s do not have a wealth of experience in learning design - why would they?
This is the core question.
✔️How best do children learn?
That is a worthy conversation everyday and my passion personally for the last 35 years.
It is challenging, yes!
But that is the essence of any instructional program. And it must be something better than the status quo.

What Are We Really Building?
A brand? A trophy cabinet? A reputation?
Or an environment where children become more intelligent, skillful, confident, and joyful?
The best clubs don’t simply organize football. They organize learning.

What If Learning Were the Measure of Success?
What if we measured a club by the questions players ask, the decisions they make, the courage they show, and the joy they experience?
What if coach development mattered as much as team results?
What if learning was the competitive advantage?
It’s time to move beyond the status quo.
Let’s build football organizations where learning and joy aren’t slogans. They are the purpose.

The Power of a Shared Language
Imagine every coach in your club using a shared language of learning.
▪️Players encounter consistent principles.
▪️Coaches exchange ideas.
▪️Parents understand the process.
▪️Directors support development rather than simply supervise teams.
A common language doesn’t make every coach the same. It helps everyone move in the same direction.
One club. One learning culture. A thousand opportunities to grow.

Stop Managing Teams. Start Developing People.
Fixtures need organizing.
Uniforms need ordering.
Tournaments need scheduling.
These things matter. But they are not the mission.
The mission is developing people through football.
▪️What systems help coaches grow? ▪️What opportunities help players think?
▪️What practices help parents support learning?
Administration should enable development, not replace it.

The Learning Organization
A football club is more than a logo, a uniform, several teams.
It is a community of learners.
When coaches learn, players benefit. When leaders learn, coaches grow. When parents learn, children flourish.
Build a learning organization, not just a club.

Brilliant @FCBarcelona 👏
Imagine finishing training and asking:
“What did I actually teach today?”
Then having a conversation about it.
Not a drill database.
Not a video library.

Let’s refocus.
Better uniforms, bigger logos, more tournaments do not help children learn.

Is it fair to say that of the 2-3 major youth club logo franchises in the US that all are clothing distributors?
What if we created a network of clubs committed to the best possible learning program for children?
I am taking this issue on next.

Teach Through the Task
Great coaches understand that learning happens through experience, not simply through explanation. Our role is not to provide every answer, but to design the conditions in which players learn to find their own.
In football, intelligence, skill and character emerge through well-designed activities that challenge players to perceive, decide, adapt and act. When training presents meaningful problems, players must read the game, weigh possibilities, collaborate, take responsibility and respond to uncertainty. These are not qualities that can be fully developed through instruction alone; they must be experienced and practiced.
Research supports this philosophy, positioning coaches as designers of learning environments rather than simply transmitters of information (Renshaw et al., 2019).
▪️Present challenges.
▪️Observe carefully.
❌ Resist the urge to provide immediate solutions.
✅ Allow players the freedom to explore, make mistakes, discover possibilities and develop ownership of their learning.
The task is the teacher. The coach designs the conditions. The player discovers the solution.
Teach through the task. Let learning emerge.

What makes a player intelligent?
A player executing your instructions isn't necessarily an intelligent player.
Intelligence appears when the situation changes, the plan breaks down and the player finds another solution.
We need players who can think, not just comply.
#TOVO
The cost of constant instruction
Every time a coach supplies the answer, a player loses an opportunity to search for one.
Instruction has its place. So does silence.
Sometimes the most valuable thing a coach can do is resist the urge to intervene.
#TOVO
The drill trap
A session can look excellent and produce very little learning.
Lots of repetitions. Perfect organization. Minimal decisions.
The question isn't whether your players completed the drill.
It's whether they became better at solving football problems.
#TOVO
We don’t want to create coaches who know more drills.
▪️We want to create coaches who understand how players learn.
▪️Coaches who can design better environments. Ask better questions.
Recognize better opportunities.
▪️Develop intelligent, skillful players of character.
