Hardware houses have replaced hacker houses as my new favourite Indian startup subtype. Torus Motion (@Torus_Motion) is building globally competitive axial flux motors out of a 3,200 sq ft house in Chennai. The TV room is a board room. Assembly and QC happens in the living room. One of the bedrooms is used for inventory storage. They have plans to move to a much larger 10,000 sq ft facility to scale manufacturing from 100 motors per month to 2,000. Another part of the Torus story that I love is how it happened. The three founders were building unmanned ground vehicles for defence (MARS UGV) when they realised that India was almost entirely dependent upon China and Europe for motors. They looked around and couldn't find suitable Indian alternatives, so they threw up their hands and said, "Fine, we'll just do it ourselves." They spent five years developing homegrown axial flux technology that outperforms global alternatives in both cost and capability. Today, Torus Motion is the first Indian company to successfully commercialise and mass-produce axial flux motors for the electric mobility sector. Check out the full facility visit video over at Runtime.
Most of the world's axial flux motors come from China. Chennai-based Torus Motion (@Torus_Motion) wants to change that. After five years in R&D, their patented axial flux motors outperform global alternatives in cost and capability. Here's how they're building them in India.

Axial flux motors are the future of EVs. But almost every EV in India still uses radial flux motors. And that's because only a handful of companies in India are making axial flux motors. This is where Torus Motion comes in. They've built India's first production-ready axial flux motor for sub-100 V applications. Their motors are up to 50% more compact, 50% lighter and 15% more efficient compared to the conventional motors. While their 7kW motor can get up to 36Nm of torque, it can get as high as 60Nm in a 20kW motor. Now, Torus isn't targeting your electric cars yet but these motors are meant to power E2W, E3W, AGVs, electric boats, and forklifts. But the most interesting part about their motors might be something else. See, most motor cores are built by cutting and stacking hundreds of thin steel sheets. That’s because the constantly changing magnetic field inside a motor can create unwanted electrical currents inside the metal. And these currents waste energy by producing heat. Breaking the core into thin, insulated layers reduces those currents from flowing freely - making the motor more efficient. But cutting and stacking hundreds of steel sheets also makes motors complicated to manufacture - especially when you need complex 3D shapes. So Torus is using something called a soft magnetic composite. These are basically tiny particles of iron powder which are covered in insulation and can be pressed directly into the motor. And this can make their axial motors simpler to manufacture and potentially more cost-effective at scale.
🚨 Chennai-based Torus Motion has developed India’s first production-ready axial flux motor for sub-100 V applications. Their V1 + V2 series axial flux motors can produce up to 20kW of peak power and are specifically designed for E2W, E3W, off-highway and robotics applications.

🚨 INDIA’S NEXT EV ADVANTAGE MAY COME FROM THE MOTOR ITSELF. 🇮🇳 Chennai-based Torus Motion has developed indigenous axial flux motors—a high-performance electric motor architecture offering greater torque density, lower weight and improved efficiency than many conventional designs. Beyond EVs, the technology has potential applications in aerospace, defence and advanced industrial systems, strengthening India’s push toward indigenous, high-value electric propulsion technologies. ⚡🇮🇳

India is pushing hard for electric vehicles and "Make in India" technology. Torus Motion is a startup based in Chennai. It is the the first company in India to develop an axial flux motor that is ready for actual production and sale (not just a lab prototype). Most advanced motors of this type have traditionally come from foreign companies. A Chennai startup making a competitive, production ready version is a positive sign for India’s deep tech ecosystem. Tamil Nadu already contributes humongous around 50% of the India's EV output. This development further strengthens the state’s EV ecosystem. Through industry, innovation and technology, Tamil Nadu is playing a leading role in contributing to Atmanirbhar Bharat.
