One afternoon, my daughter came home from school and said her teacher had told her to stop bringing lunch for another student. I figured the two children must have had some kind of disagreement, so I asked what had happened. She explained that a boy in her class had been taking food from her lunchbox for nearly three weeks. It started when he said he had forgotten his lunch, and she offered him a sandwich. The next day, he asked for food again. Before long, he was waiting for her near the cafeteria and asking what she had packed. I told her she didn't have to feed another child every day, especially since she barely had enough time to finish her own lunch. She nodded, but the next morning, she packed an extra sandwich anyway. When I asked her about it, she said the boy had told her that his mother would be angry if he came home hungry. I called the school to find out whether anyone knew what was going on. The teacher said the boy had been showing up without lunch, but the school hadn't been able to reach his mother reliably. They were working on getting him help through the school's meal program.....
