Did the State really argue this Gaza student whose mother, two sisters, brother, grandparents and aunt were killed by Israel couldn’t demonstrate a ‘strong obligation to return to Palestine when her studies ended’ such as ‘family ties’??
Jesus Christ…

The main reason she gives (at least in this interview) for Irish soldiers participating in ‘peace enforcement’ in Lebanon is that the soldiers themselves ‘want to put their training to use’. This is an obviously terrible reason for sending soldiers to a conflict zone.
Irish troops should be deployed to Lebanon as part of a new EU mission and be involved in both peacekeeping and peace enforcement duties, according to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence Helen McEntee.

Any genuine "peace enforcement" mission in the region would locate itself in northern Israel/Palestine & Golan to prevent the IDF from mass murdering more Lebanese civilians. Instead McEntee wants our troops to take on Hezbollah on Israel's behalf.A grotesque & lethal proposition

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on Mélenchon’s style of party governance but ‘authoritarian’ is overkill by any measure. His constitutional agenda is to dissipate power – as far as ending the ‘presidential monarchy’. Strange pledge for an wannabe authoritarian.

If you were a journalist you could go and look at the public sector pay scales that are freely available. But of course you are a de factor FFG press officer with an agenda.

"Wes you fool! You've commissioned a real review by mistake!"
So this morning, we ask if there’s a complication with welfare review. The PM has written a very watery non-committal piece about NEETS. The Milburn review is next month.
But have they just received an inconveniently timed new intervention - the Fonagy review. We discuss this on today’s podcast
*What is Fonagy*? After then Health Secretary Wes Streeting said in March 2025, that “mental wellbeing, illness, it’s a spectrum and I think definitely there’s an overdiagnosis”, he commissioned Professor Peter Fonagy to look at this and feed into the Milburn report. It was published earlier this month
*What does it say*? Fonagy appears to challenge the main point of Milburn. His report says: “Low participation should not be interpreted as lack of ability, motivation or aspiration. Work is not invariably beneficial, and an early return is not always appropriate.”
He also says “secure, well-designed and supported work can promote recovery, while insecure or unsupported work can worsen mental health”
The review rejects the "snowflake generation" narrative, finding a genuine, steep increase in mental ill-health (such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders) over the last three decades, particularly among young people aged 16 to 24.
And on ADHD and Autism, found “On the basis of evidence available to us we cannot conclude that overdiagnosis is occurring at scale”.
*Why a complication*? Milburn is likely to recommend that - apart from those with severe and enduring disabilities - all financial support for young people should have work and training support and requirements attached. Arguing that work per-se is automatically good, as Milburn seems to, is now challenged by Fonagy. And where drawing the line on “severe and enduring disabilities” is more complicated.

I would humbly submit that someone with a charming, luxurious row house in a walkable, historic neighborhood just steps away from his or her office may view a return-to-office mandate differently than people facing grueling commutes by car or on dysfunctional public transport to depressing vertical-office-park downtowns.

In this mindset, the main point of education is actually childcare for ‘small business owners’. We are striking because of Government intransigence over keeping pay in line with inflation *and* because of this very mindset that devalues public service

Replying to @GermanyDiplo
I appreciate Germany's feelings. But as someone who lives under US sanctions, let me say this: regret and disagreement do not unfroze bank accounts or health insurance.
The EU has a tool: the Blocking Statute. It should use it to protect those sanctioned for seeking justice.
