Prayers to our HBCU community
What should have been a weekend filled only with celebration, fellowship, and HBCU pride has been overshadowed by tragedy.
Our hearts are heavy following the shooting at the 85th Annual Magic City Classic that claimed a life and left several others injured. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life. We are also keeping those injured, their families, and everyone affected in our thoughts and prayers.
The Magic City Classic is bigger than a football game. It represents generations of tradition, the legacy of our institutions, the strength of our communities, and the family atmosphere that makes HBCU culture so special.
We cannot continue to allow senseless violence to steal moments that are meant to bring our communities together.
We must grieve and support one another and hold those responsible accountable. We also have honest conversations about protecting the spaces where our families, students, alumni, and communities come together.
To the Birmingham community, the Alabama A&M and Alabama State families, and everyone impacted, we stand with you.
Our traditions, our communities and every life is worth protecting.
