I think there's obviously issues with one company who controls 75% of the market taking a third of that revenue but gamers will hunt you for expressing this

I'm gonna spell this out because this issue is deceptively subtle: 1. The Steam client and infrastructure is somewhere between "not that hard" and "trivial". It's a download service attached to a payment processor with a smattering of services on the side. Cloud providers handle all the infrastructure these days. 2. Steam takes 30% of gross revenue; ostensibly for the privilege of using these services, but in reality it is purely to get access to the massive Steam userbase. 3. Steam users love Steam and having their whole library in one place. It works. It's dependable. It has sales and cards and achievements, oh my! 4. PC developers have no option but to distribute through Steam or lose the vast majority of sales. Not releasing on Steam destroys the business model. 5. Therefore, no amount of competition will ever unseat Steam. People post-hoc rationalize this with memes about how gracious Gabe is. And how brilliant their services are. But realistically, no avid Steam user wants other stores to succeed. The mere existence of other stores risks splintering their precious collection. They are "all in" on Steam. Invested. Even if an alternative were objectively better, by whatever metric you care about, it would still be of no interest to Steam users. They would in fact find it to be a problem and a threat to their investment. Competition in this space is not only uninteresting to most Steam users, it's actively denigrated! The CONSEQUENCE of this situation, is that 30% of all gross revenue is siphoned out of the PC games industry into a black hole. It doesn't recirculate into studios. It doesn't pay any bonuses. It doesn't fund any sequels or DLC. This is a particularly insidious tax because it's well hidden. It's a second order effect. Most Steams users don't know, and the few that do never consider the aggregate effect this has on their favorite hobby. It's undeniable that, at this point in history, Valve could EASILY lower the distribution fee while maintaining healthy margins. But they don't have to. Users are locked into Steam and therefore developers are stuck paying 30% of gross revenue to Valve. The irony is that Steam users, the very ones maintaining this unbreakable stalemate, would benefit the most from a better financed game development ecosystem. I don't think this is fixable. It's just sad.
It's really sad that the games industry is drained by a 30% tax on gross revenue. You could vibe code a Steam alternative in a week. Cloudflare egress is basically free. The industry is in desperate need of a distribution platform that allows developers to keep their revenue. Networks effects and the fanatic obsession with "muh Steam library" will make this very difficul. But if devs could actually keep their earnings, we'd have a greater selection of better games and far more financial success stories.

I’ve asked this before but is there any historical event that is like the Opposite of 9/11. Like something so good that happened that it changed the world forever

Valve could charge more modest progressive fees (eg 20% on the first $500k, similar to what the commercial engines do) and still make roughly the same amount of money they do now. They might even make more with more money for smaller devs to reinvest in more games.
Valve has a monopoly on PC games distrubution. They have enormous profit margins that they get by charging a toll between studios and their audience. It's even regressive, with larger companies getting more favorable fee structures.

I think people assume I want valve broken up or something when I talk about this but I like using steam as a customer and they offer a lot of value to devs, I just think it's obvious they charge 30% because they can. Bigger studios have the power to negotiate lower fees.

Valve is able to maintain their dominant market position and highly profitable fee structure because of high entry costs on distribution infrastructure and network effects, in addition to Steam's service quality. It's not controversial to point out basic market dynamics

Valve revenue is going to stay crazy as they keep improving services, releasing new products and keeping only people that are there to do the job without a lot of needed for managers and other useless roles

I know why people like steam but it baffles me that there's a sizable community on here that enthusiastically sides with corporate rent seeking over the people who actually make the art they consume.

There's even some game devs who praise valve for their game's success and it's like, yeah man you have to go through them if you want people to see your game.

interesting thread where a dev shows that more than 20% of sales got a refund, they paid taxes, they got the steam cut, they had to pay more than $100k to the publisher and then divided the money by 2 people counting 5 years of production but the problem is steam

This scene is a really great demonstration of how Laios' unpretentious and obsessive need to understand the dungeon for its own sake makes him better equipped to overcome it than Kabru's cold pragmatism
Amazing. Good night

People complain about Drawabox making you draw a lot of boxes but there's no deadlines and they literally tell you to spend half your time drawing whatever you want. It's obvious that play as well as study and practice both contribute to improvement
“You have to learn the fundamentals of drawing!!!!!! You need to draw basic shapes before anything!!!!!!” I will not be doing that, I am going to draw anime girls in my own self-taught, inefficient and possibly incorrect way until I stop improving and having fun

Slamming vibe coded dogshit into an already saturated market is an incredible strategy for making profit lmao
After dozens of replies, I guess I have my answer as to why indie developers would use AI: They don't care about art, or expressing anything. Their only motive is profit. Nothing else matters to them. Got it. I suppose I was foolish to expect anything else. My bad, everybody!
