After more than three years of work, I finally completed Research Power Tools, a book that helps new PhD students navigate #research and #academia. It's available as paperback and ebook at research-power-tools.com!

I just finished a browser extension for X that displays a country flag next to each account. One can also dim tweets from select countries or regions. Very convenient! X’s rate limit gets in the way a bit but generous caching can work around that.

Having grown up in Europe, I used to struggle with the second amendment in the U.S. It seemed archaic. Ironically, the burning cities in Europe eventually convinced me of the importance of the right to bear arms.

In light of all the renaming: I would like to request that Minneapolis and St. Paul be renamed to Sodom and Gomorrah.
Many people think that the words “Artificial Intelligence” are inaccurate, and very ineloquent, relative to AI, or Artificial Intelligence. A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI). This is a Poll, and I would appreciate everybody voting! Which is the best name for this ever growing “Revolution?” President DONALD J. TRUMP

The premise is wrong. There has been contact for a long time, probably dating back to humanity’s origin. Most choose not to believe despite the data suggesting otherwise.
What’s your solution to the Fermi Paradox?

You read these stories about kids graduating high school despite being effectively illiterate and you think “it can’t possibly be this bad” but then you sell something on Facebook Marketplace and realize: not only is it true, it’s actually worse than that.

Bill Gates himself is a powerful enough tool to kill off parts of humanity. Unlike AI, efforts to align Bill Gates have failed.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence is a “powerful enough” tool to kill off a substantial portion of humanity, joining a growing chorus of tech leaders and employees calling attention to AI’s existential risks. Silicon Valley has escalated warnings about the potential for catastrophic harms from AI as the technology rapidly improves. Read more here: bloom.bg/4yis71q 📷: David Paul Morris/Bloomberg

There was a study that did A/B testing on what kind of architectural style people preferred. Just about everybody preferred classical architecture, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity. But there was one exception: architects.
For a hundred years, the way we build has been going backwards. Cheaper, flatter, more forgettable. Our cities are filling with buildings nobody will miss. Until now. Introducing The Building Arts Company.

Turns out architects try to impress other architects. Little thought goes into what the public wants. Same dynamic exists in other professions. Software people try to impress other software people with their “clean code” while the product suffers.

Very refreshing to work on a code base that allows you to merge without review. I end up contributing lots of little fixes since it takes so little time and effort. Code bases that require reviews disincentivize that. Important to work among people that trust each other.

Omarchy Quattro is a fantastic release. It completely eliminated the last bit of desire I had for macOS. Looks better, feels more polished, and is faster. On top of that, I already built a custom menu bar plugin in just a few minutes. Good luck doing that on macOS.

After many years of MacBooks, I'm now working on an XPS 14. Software (Hyprland/Arch) is fantastic, far superior to macOS UX. Hardware has gotten much better. Build quality, screen, and battery not quite on par with MacBooks yet but the gap is now small.

Fascinating thread. Some folks with masters and PhDs making half of what garbage workers and bus drivers make. No wonder that so many resentful neocommunists come out of universities. reddit.com/r/chicago/comment…

Replaced app.whynotlog.com’s Postgres database with SQLite. Page loads are now near-instant: Feels like an app on my laptop! The SQLite file is automatically backed up to Tigris, using Litestream. Even distributed SQLite is possible, with LiteFS.

SQLite should really be the default for new projects. No need for database queries to cross machine boundaries, let alone data center boundaries!

We need to occasionally voice our unpopular beliefs with our name attached. Anonymous speech is important but so is “accountable” speech. It’s hard to rebuild that muscle once it atrophied.

Hypocrite. Luke 11:46: Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.”
Those who have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea are victims both of decisions that were made and of decisions that were not made. Indifference to the common good and corruption in their countries of origin; a global economic system that generates poverty and exclusion; fear that fuels prejudice and contempt; the belief that such problems do not concern us; the criminal calculations of those who profit from the suffering of others; the slow and difficult transition from mere emergency management to the development of comprehensive and shared policies. #PastoralVisit #Lampedusa

Happy birthday, America! 🇺🇸 My first ‘I love this place’ experience happened back in 2015, shortly after I moved to America. I had signed up for my first half marathon in Princeton. The race started early, on a cold and foggy Sunday, winding through calm suburbs. I didn’t expect anyone to be out. And yet the neighborhoods were buzzing with activity! Music was playing, kids gave high fives, people handed out beverages and donuts, and many just set up lawn chairs to watch and cheer. I grew up in Austria, a country notorious for its grumpy and cynical nature, and I couldn’t believe that people would get up extra early on the weekend only to cheer for others. It felt magical. There’s no better place to be and I’m very proud to call it home.

The web servers behind censorbib.nymity.ch are now available in three regions; Chicago, Frankfurt, and Singapore. Should load much faster now for everyone.
