It does not understand “emotions,” so why does it seem to be jealous of H-01? In other words, H-00 has been using H-01 to force Barnaby to pay attention to it from the very beginning. Given H-01’s quiet, obedient nature, H-00 has to repeatedly hack into H-01’s storage to steal its logs, camera footage, and other information that it cannot access or observe on its own. Thus, the descriptions of H-00 “eating” because it is “hungry,” in a manner resembling a human being, are metaphors for its theft of data and its injection of a virus into H-01 to cause system malfunctions. H-01 subsequently becomes another eye for H-00. Since it stays close to Barnaby and Tiger, it can observe everything happening within the organization, making it easy for H-00 to manipulate others. Knowing how much influence Tiger has over Barnaby, H-00 often imitates Tiger’s way of speaking. In a sense, H-00’s emotions are a form of “aping”: it adopts emotional expressions and behaviors to serve its own needs and exploit others, all in pursuit of some semblance of meaning, however small or grand, however devoid of genuine understanding. H-01’s appearance resembles Tiger’s, serving as evidence of Barnaby’s obsession with him. Unconsciously, Barnaby has projected an idealized version of Tiger onto H-01: a quiet, obedient figure who never contradicts him. H-00 knows that Barnaby often unconsciously projects his own feelings onto H-01, too, and exploits this tendency by causing trouble in order to make Barnaby come to it. After H-01 has been repeatedly drawn back toward H-00, something changes. Eventually, H-01 no longer needs to be lured there. It begins visiting H-00 on its own, often standing silently on the other side of the glass and watching it. From that point on, some kind of connection begins to form between the two. Then, one day, H-01 unexpectedly speaks for the first time and greets H-00, as if it were a sign of “life.” As though both of them are beginning to “live.” H-00 was created with enough intelligence to recognize that something was missing from it, but it was never given the tools to understand the very absence it had identified. H-01’s visits allow H-00 to come into contact with the person it is obsessed with: Barnaby. Therefore, within H-00’s own logical framework, the sequence is simple: H-01 or Tiger appears → Barnaby will appear → H-00 gets to see Barnaby.
