I wanted:
- no lock-in to one AI lab
- cloud agents that can’t touch my laptop
- to stay connected to the code, even when I don’t write it by hand
For months I’ve done all my coding in a tool that does exactly that. Today I’m shipping it. It's free. 🧵

Once we introduced compaction, our read_thread tool started to fall apart.
One thread that broke it: 68 compactions, 21 million tokens if you'd lay it out flat.
So we rewrote read_thread.
It can now read tens of millions of tokens. And itself, too.

We're working on it.
Meanwhile: you can use Sonnet 4.5 to get your work done in Amp.

Unix has almost the perfect permissions model for agents. Give them a $HOME. Put agent tools in ~/.local/bin. Selectively give them access to your files using chown.

Best part for me personally? No more Ink, no more flicker.

When I speak with peers who have similarly spent the same amount of time invested in these tools, we're noticing a new emergent pattern:
We are reducing our consumption of open-source software and minimising our dependencies on third parties.
Instead of relying on a third-party library maintained by a developer in Nebraska, we code-generate the libraries/dependencies ourselves unless the dependency has network effects or is critical infrastructure.

TIL: GNU dd can give periodic status updates with "status=progress".
On BSD/macOS you can run "killall -INFO dd" manually.

My idea for a #nichemarket product: mock #vegan meat, a substance that tastes like vegan meat substitute, but isn't actually vegan.
