“Wow seems like Muse Wonder is pretty good, sounds like they caught the frontier”
“Nice I think I saw that too, you gonna try it?”
“No, you?”
“no”

I think the single most alarming thing about AI is that Meta is poised to be a major player, and every single thing that Meta has ever done has been an absolute catastrophe for the human species.

"The computer was not made in the image of the person," the anthropologist Edwin Hutchins wrote in Cognition in the Wild in 1995. "The computer was made in the image of the formal manipulations of abstract symbols. And the last 30 years of cognitive science can be seen as attempts to remake the person in the image of the computer."
The first time I read this line it felt intuitive, but I think we’re approaching a precipice where this changes, where the computer begins to remake itself through our concepts. Its form factor will shift again. We will more and more encounter computation "in the wild," and our common reference points, the personal computer, the discrete device, or even discrete program, may become only one of its manifestations among many.

counterpoint: these storyteller posts go viral for the same reason horoscopes do. everyone sees themselves in the description.
Replying to @adelwu_
startups desperately want people with the taste, technical ability, and independence that can only be developed by spending years doing whatever you want instead of whatever you're told
unfortunately this also produces people who don't want to work for you

Math can do itself now, so now we face learning to be sensing humans, again, deeper.

a puzzle: you are one of a small handful of people wise enough to understand, at the dawn of superintelligence, humanity is at serious risk of extinction. to persuade the masses, you have to not host consensual non consent rape parties. Can you do it?

So tired of seeing startups with zero-shot slop websites, man. Have some self-respect.

The main thing I have to say to the young generation of Americans is that your grandparents and great-grandparents committed a kind of accounting fraud when they ran our country a century ago with social security, and at the time it was a reasonable affordance to grant our leaders, who were dealing with an economic depression and a world war, but nonetheless they did commit the fraud, and they ended up buying all sorts of extravagant things using the fraudulent gains, including what became the thing we now understand to be the high-modern technocratic nation-state, and that is glorious and also bad and all that, but the thing is there’s still the issue about the accounting fraud, whose debt is coming due and is coming due fast.
It is best to consider this with as minimal residue of sentiment as possible, to really sit with it, to stare it coldly in the face.
Unwinding the great fraud of the high modernists is your job, whether you wish it to be or not.

is it really a new brand launch if you didn't post an animation of someone adjusting the curves in a vector editor?
if you did include that, does that mean the logo is good and thoughtfully made?

an artist jumping into gen ai today, will eventually have more success than incumbents using gen ai
a lot of the muscle memory for image/vid generation comes from breaking prompts open and trying to find non intuitive solutions
but ai systems have improved so much now, that a newbie can be more direct and have successful outputs vs sweating
rapid acceleration requires adjusting priors
imo most of the "why are you mathematicians crying is the point of math to figure out true results or a jobs program for u guys to have pointless fun" is basically meanspirited bullshit from ppl with little to no appreciation for mathematics. this shit isn't even applied to artists, people aren't confused when artists say "i feel bad about ai replacing my ability to make art", they intuitively understand that art is not purely about maximizing the literal production of pretty pictures and it's quite reasonable for people who love it to feel pain about the state of the world as it changes and begins to value them and what they love less. certainly, as with artists, there's perhaps some forms of copes that are false or over-reactions that are disproportionate. certainly, their loss is in several important ways humanities gain. art being insanely abundant is a beautiful thing. solving the depths of mathematical mysteries we might not have gotten to for centuries unaided, likewise.
but people are allowed to and deserve to grieve. that a tradeoff might be worth it does not negate the loss. hold some grace for people whos lives and sense of meaning is being thrown into turmoil. it's going to happen to every single one of us. it doesn't make u somehow a better person because perhaps u already feel inoculated to the future shock and welcome it. treating others well makes u a good person. and trust me man, the future shock will come hard enough to fuck u up too given a little more time.
