Been thinking a lot about this lately. Students seem hungry for something, anything, really.
In the 70s/80s American cities produced intellectually ambitious creative urban theory —Koolhaas, Kwinter, Zone eg— capable of grasping the city’s wild historical mutations. Nothing comparable exists today, there’s no serious/crazy urbanism, it’s completely stalled precisely when city’s transforming and new thought’s needed

"Epstein was not a finalist or even selected for the top 20 among the applicant pool when he applied for the role — Provost Elizabeth Bejar and President Jeanette Nuñez declared the search failed before appointing him in an interim, tenure-track capacity." miamiherald.com/news/local/e…

Had a blast talking about my book with the fantastic John Heckman on his channel, "The Tattooed Historian." (He didn't make me show my tattoos, but I would have.) youtube.com/live/J-D2tsGjYzU…

I'm biased ofc, but I think this is the best piece published in the NYT in years to think with about how we got here, where we are heading, and how we might want to consider a different path and approach. nytimes.com/2022/04/05/opini…

The sky above Toronto today is a greyish yellow. And while this is happening the government of Canada is quite literally shedding its (already inadequate) climate commitments and going all in with billions for new fossil fuel infrastructure.
An apocalyptic scene unfolded on Highway 11 in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, this evening as the sky turned deep red and nearly black.

when i said i wanted architecture to be more relevant in this country this is not what i had in mind though it is perhaps what we deserve
Trump posts photos of work being done on the White House's North Portico. Trump wanted to replace the existing Ionic columns with more ornate Corinthian columns, like those at Mar-a-Lago.

None of my favorite traditional architecture accounts are posting anything about all the beautiful architecture going up in DC for the 250 year celebration. 🙁

Some months ago, I began typing an email to my friend historian Richard John and quickly realized I was writing an essay I had wanted to do for years. I published it this morning and call it, "Two Forms of 'Technology' Criticism: Cultural Pessimism Versus Materialism." In it, I make a distinction between materialist critique and a different tradition rooted in cultures of despair and condescension that frets about "instrumental reason" and something it calls "technology." Materialism is right and good. Cultural pessimism sucks. Link below.

I wrote about the debate over whether Democrats should talk about “climate,” which is kind of a nonsensical question, and how it’s sort of like a debate over whether to talk about capitalism

Why is ICE buying so many warehouses, and what does this have to do with the warehouse's historically shifting place in the US economy? In Places Journal, I chronicle the long arc of the warehouse's carceral geography from 1846 to present. placesjournal.org/article/th…
