You can’t use a word derogatorily and just claim it’s not derogatory
It is!
I’m never ever seen or heard a Ghanaian use the term Alata in a neutral or positive way
Alata isn’t a derogatory word. It has connections to slave trade era with Yuroba speaking people from Allada Kingdom, from what is now Benin.
They settled around Jamestown in Accra, in an area that came to be called Ngleshie Alata. So Alata first referred to a place and a group of people with that history, not to a bad word.
How Allada became Alata, I don’t know exactly, but that’s a normal occurrence in history, original names get twisted and changed in funny ways, for whatever reason it could be..
