Few things make New York feel more like New York than the sounds, traditions and joy of our Caribbean community.
I got to share in that joy at Soca Fest, surrounded by Caribbean New Yorkers and united by one rhythm as @Kestheband brought Brooklyn to life with the sweet sounds of soca.
It's official: the fête has begun. See you on the road!

In 1950, the Trinidad Guardian published a lengthy article—’Columbus Brings Sugar Cane to West Indies’. The author was Eric Williams, the future prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago. The author stated that in 1493, Christopher Columbus transported cane across the ocean, “…with the deliberate intention of acclimatising it and making the West Indies the sugar bowl of Europe.”
More than a decade later, in 1962, Williams, in a chapter “The Bankruptcy of Sugar” in his book History of the People of Trinidad and Tobago, identified the early competition and obstacles faced by the British West Indian sugar cane industry.
Sugar never recovered.

Hate speech causes real harm – and has no place in our societies.
Although it may take many forms, the consequences of hate and intolerance are real and painful.
We can all take action by challenging hate wherever we may see it.

(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people.
OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted?
A thread on some of of our findings:

My therapist once told me: “Get good at bouncing back. A rough conversation, a bad day, a skipped workout, a choice you regret, none of it has to ruin the rest of your week. You can reset whenever you decide to. You can't change what happened, but you can choose how long you hold onto it”.
Let me get this straight…
OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit. Open source. For everyone. “To benefit humanity.”
Then he raised billions of dollars.
Then he closed the source code.
Then he converted to for-profit.
Then he scraped the entire internet without asking anyone.
Then he used YOUR writing YOUR art YOUR code to train his models.
Now he’s on stage saying you’ll pay HIM to access intelligence. Just like a water meter.
He stole all of your data. He built the product with your work. And now he’s going to bill you to use it…
Corporate greed has reached an all time high, and they’re not even hiding it anymore…

In boardrooms, ministries, and even casual conversation, non-profit organisations (NPOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are often spoken about as if they sit outside the “real economy.”
This perception is not only outdated; it is economically inaccurate and, in some cases, damaging.

🇨🇺🇯🇲Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba
Cuba regrets the decision of the government of Jamaica to cease medical cooperation, yielding to pressure from the U.S.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba reports that, on March 4, the Foreign Ministry of Jamaica communicated to our Embassy in that country the unilateral decision of its government to terminate the health cooperation agreement that has linked both nations for decades.
With this action, the government of Jamaica yields to the pressures of the government of the United States, which is not concerned about the health needs of the Caribbean brothers.
Cuba deeply regrets that in this way a history of fruitful and sustained collaboration is disregarded, one that has brought countless benefits to the Jamaican people, who are now deprived of receiving the basic and specialized health services that Cuban collaborators provided.
In response to the step taken by the government of Jamaica, the government of Cuba has made the sovereign decision to proceed with the return of the Cuban Medical Brigade. These health professionals leave behind an indelible mark and return to Cuba with the satisfaction of a duty fulfilled and the permanent willingness to assist wherever their spirit of solidarity is required.
Cuba’s work in Jamaica is an eloquent example of genuine cooperation. In the last 30 years alone, more than 4,700 Cuban collaborators have provided medical assistance on the Caribbean island. Currently, the Brigade was composed of 277 professionals whose work has had a tangible and profound impact on strengthening the Jamaican health system.
The historic results of this collaboration speak for themselves:
· More than 8,176,000 patients treated.
· 74,302 surgical procedures performed.
· 7,170 births attended.
· More than 90,000 lives saved.
Likewise, through the Operation Miracle program, present in Jamaica since 2010, the sight of nearly 25,000 Jamaicans has been restored or improved. Cuban cooperation has also been decisive in projects for the control and prevention of diseases such as malaria and in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The most recent example of this dedication was seen after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which severely affected the island. In those difficult circumstances, the Cuban Medical Brigade remained firmly at their posts, many of its members working for more than 72 consecutive hours and actively joining the tasks of recovering hospitals and communities.
Faithful to the historic relations of brotherhood and solidarity that unite us with Jamaica, Cuba reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the Jamaican people, who will always be able to count on the selfless cooperation of Cuba.
Havana, March 6, 2026.
