Cohere is the epitome of a cancerous Canadian tech company. The culture, the people, and the dog shit models. Everything about it sucks.

I find it quite funny that @cohere is out here blocking accounts that are critical of the company. 😂 You’d think a firm now raising a massive Series E (targeting up to C$7B / about $5B USD at a roughly C$35–36B valuation), with Ottawa taking an equity stake of up to C$1.6B, Nvidia in the round, a German lead investor (Schwarz Group, the parent of Lidl, which has its own cloud ambitions), and Bell as a partner, would be a little more resilient to questions about where the money’s coming from, who builds the infrastructure, and how “sovereign” the stack actually is. 🤷 Just yesterday the government was celebrating this as a cornerstone of Canadian AI leadership and data sovereignty. Cohere has committed to stay headquartered here and put at least C$1.7B into Canadian compute by 2030. Fine as far as it goes. But the practical reality is still heavy dependence on Nvidia GPUs, past partnerships that involved US cloud providers, and a model where the “Canadian champion” is the vehicle for public money rather than broad, open infrastructure. If Canada’s data sovereignty and AI strategy were actually serious, the priority would look different. It would focus on publicly funded or strongly incentivized data-center and power buildout, broadly accessible compute for Canadian businesses, researchers, and individuals, and a real push for open-weight models that anyone can run, fine-tune, and host themselves. That is what creates genuine sovereignty: the ability to keep data warehoused in Canada under Canadian control, a digital footprint people and companies actually own, domestic compute capacity that isn’t gated behind one company’s roadmap, and the secondary benefits of energy infrastructure investment and industrial capacity. Backing one well-connected lab (even a capable one that has released some open models like Command A+) while the underlying silicon, capital, and much of the operational stack still flow through foreign hands is a narrower bet.
