In 1939 nearly a thousand German and Austrian Jews fled on that ship, only to be turned away by Cuba, the United States, and Canada. They were forced back to Europe. Many later died in the camps. That story became a symbol of closed doors. 🎷Far fewer know the Struma. 🎷In December 1941 almost eight hundred Romanian Jews climbed onto an old, overcrowded cattle barge in Constanța. The engine was half-dead. The ship was a floating coffin. Romania let them sail. That was the last favor anyone did for them. 🎷They reached Istanbul and sat there for ten weeks. Britain refused the certificates that would have allowed them into Palestine. Turkey refused to let them land without those papers. No one wanted these people either. On 23 February 1942 the Turks towed the disabled ship back into the Black Sea and left it drifting. The next morning a Soviet submarine put a torpedo into it. Nearly everyone drowned. One nineteen-year-old lived. 🎷Romania. Britain. Turkey. The Soviet Union. Each played its part. None of them acted as if these lives mattered. The St. Louis is remembered. The Struma stayed quieter for decades. The Soviet role especially remained buried until the archives opened much later, and even now full responsibility has never been clearly claimed. 🎷Two ships. Two groups of Jews with nowhere to go. The same pattern: doors closed, power looking away, and the dead left to speak for themselves. The facts are in the records. The silence around them still sits heavy.

They’re circulating Francis Trevelyan Miller’s History of World War II and insisting the book never mentions gas chambers. That claim is false. The book states clearly: “In Belsen, Kramer kept an orchestra to play him Viennese music while he watched children torn from their mothers to be burned alive. Gas chambers disposed of thousands of persons daily.” It also calls the camps “mass butcher shops” and describes Buchenwald as an “extermination factory.” This was a 1945 U.S. Armed Services edition. It reflected what American and British forces found in the concentration camps they liberated in Germany, Dachau, Buchenwald, Belsen. Those were concentration camps, not the purpose-built death camps. The actual death camps were in occupied Poland: Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, Belzec, Sobibor, Chelmno, Majdanek. They were liberated by the Red Army, not the U.S. Army. Majdanek in July 1944. Auschwitz in January 1945. The others had already been dismantled by the Germans in 1943. Soviet war journalists documented them while the war was still going on. Vasily Grossman wrote The Hell of Treblinka in 1944. Ilya Ehrenburg co-edited The Black Book with him. Boris Polevoy reported from Auschwitz. These weren’t obscure sources. They were major, well-known writers and correspondents. Survivor accounts from the gas chambers are extensive and consistent. The Miller book is a snapshot of what the Western Allies saw in Germany. It was never a full account of the death camps in Poland. The people pushing this know that. They’re just hoping most readers don’t. This is the same denial that David Irving and Arthur Butz (the Northwestern professor) spent decades pushing. Different book, same tired game, trying to cast doubt on the most thoroughly documented mass murder in history.
