Friday lightning talks are back at Bitspace, and #Bitaloo (@shourya742) is the because. Theyโ€™d stopped for a while, and then he started them up again and somehow got the rest of us to plan our Fridays around them. Two weeks ago it was deterministic simulation testing. Last week was coherence and the orphan rules in Rust. Heโ€™s been deep in AI for quiet a while now, and basically everything he figures out ends up in front of us, which is one of the best deals any of us has ever gotten. We call them lightning talks, but each one #Bitaloo did, ran more than an hour, so itโ€™s a bit less lightning and a bit more thunderous, and all Bitspace regulars have mutually agreed to call his talks "Thunder Talks" from now on. Itโ€™s been delightful and fun to see this happen. Someone gets curious about something, thereโ€™s a room full of people happy to listen, and a couple of hours later a bunch of us understand things we had no idea about the week before. Having a place where this can happen casually is a big part of why weโ€™re here at Bitspace. The next AI Thunder Talk is tomorrow at 8pm. The start time is the only part weโ€™re sure of, which is why dinner will be getting delivered to Bitspace!

Itโ€™s so funny that Iโ€™ve been working out of @bitshala for more than a year now, but this was my first session here! โ€œHow to Bitcoinโ€ by @TrezorAcademy and @BitcoinHer21. Day 1 - Session 1&2 successfully concluded with a bang of a debate with over 45 attending the session! Look forward to the day 2 and the finale session tomorrow!

AI truly is a double-edged sword.
We've paused Blink services while we investigate a security incident. An attacker accessed a limited number of custodial accounts and withdrew funds. The large majority of funds are secure. Non-custodial wallets are not affected.

"Macha the chairs aren't there in the cabins yet." โ€œIt's fine, let me just come work from there for a bit.โ€œ "It's 9pm macha!" โ€œExactly, it'll be soooo quiet. I'm coming now.โ€œ

Opening the new Bitspace on 5th September, and would love to personally invite the people running other spaces and communities in Bangalore. It's weird building our second space and barely knowing anyone running the other ones in the city. If you know any of them (mentioned in the comments), an intro would mean a lot. Thanks!
Bitspace Build Log #7: Furniture's here finally! Came to test projector's mounting angle, acoustic paneling's done in every room that needed it. Finishing touches start soon. Only 3 days to go. Come see what's actually happening in Bitcoin in India and the space hosting it all.

I meannn, the chairs are here. But guys, it's just... a little more complicated than that :)
Bitspace Build Log #5: ACs and cabin doors installed, cupboards & pantry counters being set, and more furniture coming. Our regulars are like "When can we come backkkk?" Apparently, they've been unproductive without Bitspace ๐Ÿฅน. 4 more days guys, atleast let the chairs come.

The Shippers, the Yappers, and One Room A year ago, Bitspace divided itself into two halves. The split is between two kinds of people who have two very different definitions of a "good day," and both belong here. The Shippers are people who work on Bitcoin full time, they come in and need to sit down in silence and work for 6 to 10 hours. The Yappers come in specifically to talk, to argue about something, to think out loud, to meet other Bitcoiners and figure out what they want to build. That second group turns up once or twice a week, and when they do, the place is loud and busy and genuinely great. (I fall in both those groups depending on the day ๐Ÿ˜†) But the loud days weren't as great for the person trying to review a PR or finish something at their desk just ten feet away. Plus, neither of them is the guest here. Both of them are the reason Bitspace exists in the first place. Most Bitcoiners work remotely and alone, and the point of having an actual room is that things are able to happen here that don't happen online. But on the loud days, the Shippers would simply pick up their laptops and go work from the cabins and the meeting rooms and not come out until it was over. Hence we needed more private and quiet areas for deep work. This was the simple & direct answer to the noise. What the Shippers here actually want isn't a nicer desk, it's a door they can close for several hours. In our old space we had about four of those. In the new one? Nine.
Bitspace Build Log #4: Glass is in for cabins now, carpet's laid, and cassette ACs are going in. With the Rockwool already inside the walls, these cabins are feeling so much more quiet now. Can't wait to see one of us entering elite level flow state in here! Just 5 more days.

Exactly this.
The fact that we can put in this much of care for all the Open Source devs working from Bitspace to make their lives a little easier makes my heart warm. Unlike in corporate, FOSS devs are on their own in the wild. Having a shared safe space goes a long way in mental ressilience, connection and collaborations. We are greayful at @bitshala_org to be able to serve for the contributors of Public Commons doing thankless jobs everyday.

Regulars at Bitspace have gotten a lot more serious about their health, gym & diet lately. I believe if you're building a space for a certain group of people, it should help them become who they're trying to be, not just offer basic amenities so they can sit still for nine hrs.
Bitspace Build Log #3: many regulars at the old space told us their back was killing them from sitting all day. So height-adjustable tables are going into the new co-working area. Ceiling lights are done, ACs installed, sleeping pod construction starts soon. Only 5 days to go.

I have many thoughts on this. As a lead maintainer of a project that has many contributors receiving grants, I take this responsibility extremely seriously. Every grant is a huge amount of trust that these organizations put on our project and I see my primary role as the mediator of that trust. I have seen many contributors come and go. Some have managed to get grants without producing anything worthwhile after years of larping on a side project that has almost zero impact. Others have produced immense value, without any grant at all. This has multiple risks and negative consequences: - Trust: We as a project risk losing the trust of organizations that want to support us. I regard every grantee as a potential liability. If you mess up, we as a project suffer more from it than you do. We might be better off without your minimal contributions. - Internal conflicts: People in the team know exactly who produces value and who pretends to be busy with pet projects. Seeing someone get a big grant for a worthless hobby project, or just producing a fraction of the output than someone else, hurts internal harmony. We have a high bar for excellence. Either you give your best, or you have to go somewhere else. - Stasis: Grants can feel like "easy money". Some people just kick back and enjoy, work 2 days a week for a full time salary someone else would kill for. This is deeply unfair and hurts the project, since there might be other folks that could've done a much better job if they received your grant. Open source work on the internet is a global market. There could be way more talented, more ambitious, more motivated people out there who would do a better job. If you work for in the industry, that company will have to constantly evaluate whether its worth keeping you whether it'd be better to replace you with a more productive developer. In most of the grant ecosystem, there is hardly any feedback between the grant renewal periods. This is why I take my job extremely seriously. I value the trust of the organizations who support Cashu more than anything else. My promise to them that my highest objective is to make sure their resources and their trust are used in the best possible way. This is good for us as a project, and good for the funding organizations as well. It is also good for the grantees, even if it sometimes feels harsh. If you get used to being a lazy dev with easy grant money, your career will be over as soon as you lose that privilege. There is no place for slackers in our team. We have no time for lazy people working on pet rock projects. If you don't show up every day, work at least as much as someone with a comparable salary in the industry, I will go back to the org that funds you and let them know about it. My team knows this. Our funders know this. Work hard or go find a different job.
I have been very critical and sceptical of open source grants in the space for a long time. Pet projects with no users should not be funded, they distort the market and add tons of new "standards" with no use, no validation, no real world feedback. And I'm not even talking about the value of grants given with no risk and strings attached, to people who often don't have experience nor track record. I'm with Nick on this one. Grants should be for things that are USED, infrastructure, libraries, etc, with ACTUAL EXISTING VALUE. Sorry for everyone who feels hurt, I'm not responsible for your feelings.

Bitspace Build Log #2: Wooden floor is in, second coat of paint done, switchboards going into the cabins, acoustic paneling coming up to reduce the echo inside, lighting's next. This is the first time I walked in and it actually felt like a space, not a site. Only 6 days to go.

"India is an applied research/application based market, we can't do novel research" yes and it won't change unless we start a culture of producing and promoting research. There are a lot of folks who have great ideas but not a good platform to work on them. That's what our North Star is with Bangalore Paper Club! Edition 3 was (as usual) a full house, this week's theme was model compression. We discussed - 1-bit and 1.58 bit LLMs - Ternary models and their applications - Extreme quantization Since we are in a resource constrained geography, how can we make the best of it? Thanks @spc_india for the venue and thanks all who attended. YouTube episode soon! also s/o to the guy who wore "Attention is all you need" as his Tee! legend!
Back after a 4 week delay. The gap was long enough that people started chasing me about it, and somewhere in all those messages the same line kept showing up: this is the best thing happening for AI researchers in Bangalore. Bangalore Paper Club Edition #3 is a series of offline research gatherings, under The Research Room India. We try to do it biweekly, this one was delayed a bit. but hey! This edition's theme: making models smaller without making them worse. and @spc_india seemed like the best place to host it this time. See you on 28th Aug! Link in the comment. RT and tag people who missed the previous editions!

As someone who has been in both side of FOSS grants for last 7 years, I strongly disagree, but can identify the nuances. We need more FOSS granting agencies, not less. Private capital doesn't have incentives to build foundational "software commons" that every product, including Liana, depends on. Missallocation could be real, but that can be solved by having more agencies doing smaller grants. Not less. We have very few agencies doing grants in the space and thats the exact kind of centralisation that can cause missallocations. Products should also get kickstarter grants. I don't see a reason why not. There are many products at pre-seed stages that needs support. Bitcoin product market is inherently distorted right now as VCs are crunching away liquidity from freedom tech to AI, thats not FOSS dev's or granting agency's fault. Overall the FOSS ecosystem is massively underfunded. Projects run on bare minimum teams, with many devs doing parttime. PMs struggle to expand and increase impact of the projects. Projects like seed signer, b10c's network monitors etc doesn't get enough support. The right take away here is FOSS grants can have a structural problem currently but that doesn't mean we can do away with it. We need more decentralisation there. Fix the problem, don't kill the organism that the whole industry is depending upon.

There's LORE behind why we're moving, why a new space, why rockwool and all ๐Ÿ˜† But it's a story for another day.
Walking through today realizing how many tiny choices go into a space before anyone ever sits in it. Chose Rockwool over Fiberglass thinking about the person who's going to sit to work, headphones off, actually able to hear themselves think. No more involuntary eavesdropping.
