Farewell to the outgoing SAWEA CEO, Mr Niveshen Govender. You led the organisation with steady hands and a humble spirit. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
Leadership Announcement | Farewell to Niveshen Govender
The South African Wind Energy Association bids farewell to its Chief Executive Officer, Niveshen Govender, as he concludes four years of dedicated service to the wind energy sector.
This past week, SAWEA bid a heartfelt farewell to our outgoing CEO, Niveshen Govender, at an intimate industry gathering held at the Radisson Hotel, OR Tambo on 09 April, a fitting send-off for a leader who gave everything to this sector.
The evening brought together the people who walked this journey with him: his wife, the SAWEA team and Board leadership, standing committee leadership, representatives from member companies, industry colleagues and stakeholders including the Danish Embassy and @DOEE_ZA, and our friends from @SAPVIA, who generously sponsored the evening.
SAPVIA's CEO, Rethabile Melamu alongside former and current SAPVIA chairpersons and colleagues, were present to honour Niveshen's contribution to the broader renewable energy landscape.
Our chairperson, Stephen Koopman addressed the room, reflecting on the mark he leaves on this organisation and the sector.
When Niveshen stepped into the CEO role, he arrived with a clear and uncompromising vision: predictable procurement, industrialisation policy, and building local wind industry capabilities that could not only compete internationally but supply export markets.
He understood that South Africa's energy transition wasn't just about megawatts, it was about people, policy, and building an industry with staying power.
Over his four year tenure, he carried that vision into every boardroom, every stakeholder engagement, and every difficult conversation. He led SAWEA through a critical chapter in South Africa's decarbonisation journey, advocating for the wind sector with consistency, credibility, and a long-term lens.
And he did it all with style. Niveshen was known as much for his sharp suits and signature sneakers as he was for his sharp thinking, a leader who understood that how you show up matters, in every sense of the word.
To Niveshen, thank you for your leadership, your commitment, and your belief in what this industry can become.
The foundation you've built continues.
We wish you all the best.
