🚨 BINANCE: ~$6.3 BILLION HEIST BY THE NUMBERS 🚨 The largest crypto theft on record. On Oct 29, attackers drained Binance hot wallets across ~10 blockchains. Most of it left in about 20 minutes. 💰 What Was Taken • BTC: 18,270 BTC (~$1.48B) • Ethereum: ~200K ETH + tokens (~$3.8B total) • TRON: ~$628M • Stablecoins: ~2.49B USDT, 823M USDC • Alts: 233M XRP, ~970K SOL ⏱️ How It Happened (UTC) • Oct 28–29: Attacker funded gas via Tornado Cash, tested the exploit code on two wallets and rehearsed on a third. • 20:05: First hit: 233M XRP. • 20:10: Solana drained, followed by Base and Optimism. • 20:20: TRON and Bitcoin hit. All 18,270 BTC left in one block, then split into 19 addresses. • 20:24: The big one. Using EIP-7702, the attacker had Binance's busiest ETH hot wallet run their code. One transaction swept 167K ETH and 1.6B USDT. • Root cause (per Binance): A compromised DevOps engineer's laptop. Binance says no private keys leaked. Its own systems signed the withdrawals. ❄️ The Aftermath • Frozen: ~$2.7–3B. Tether locked ~1.76B USDT, Circle 823M USDC. Arbitrum's Security Council secured ~8.4K ETH and ~74.6M ARB. • Laundering: Over $700M in stablecoins was swapped into ETH/TRX before the freezes. ~60M USDT went into Aave to borrow ~19.7K ETH. • Attribution: TRM Labs, Chainalysis and Elliptic link it to North Korea's TraderTraitor (Lazarus). Not officially confirmed by any government yet. • Users: Binance says it will cover all losses from SAFU and company funds. ❓You May Wonder - Why steal billions in freezable stablecoins? A: The drain was automated: take everything, sort it out later. The attacker did swap over $700M before freezes landed, at a steep loss to market price. But they were slow. Most USDT sat untouched for ~37 minutes, long enough for Tether to freeze it. - Why borrow ETH on Aave? A: Post stolen USDT as collateral, walk away with ETH that no issuer can freeze. Aave has since frozen the affected markets. The position is still over-collateralized, so no bad debt so far. - Is the rest gone? A: ~$3.2B in BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL and TRX remains with the attacker, beyond any issuer's freeze. As of Oct 30, none had reached an exchange, mixer or bridge. All addresses are flagged, so it can still be stopped at cash-out. Bybit's laundering took months. We can expect the same here.
