Federal officials are treating a fight over a D.C. golf course with the gravity of a national emergency, @ables_kelsey writes. She reports on the seven-hour court hearing that illustrated just how much Donald Trump wants to overhaul the site: theatlantic.com/culture/2026…
I usually play the Blue course at East Potomac, but glad to get a round in at the mini golf course and photograph it for @TheAtlantic
Trump's plan to turn a DC park into a championship golf venue endangers even a mini golf course. It’s a microcosm of a microcosm: the most welcoming place in a park Congress designated in 1897 for the public.
I played a round for my latest @TheAtlantic ~

Read @ables_kelsey on a footnote that could change the way the Smithsonian interprets American history:
theatlantic.com/culture/2026…
New: The White House is conditioning $190 million for the Smithsonian on compliance with its executive order "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History" through legally-binding footnotes in recent OMB apportionments.
theatlantic.com/culture/2026…
The new footnote revives a strategy the White House has used to intimidate the institution over the past year. In April, OMB went as far as to require the Smithsonian to comply with Trump's budget request, which has no force of law, over the appropriations bill Congress passed.

NEWS: The White House is following through on plans to place signs outside the Smithsonian's American History Museum accusing it of partisan bias. They're prepping about a dozen signs, costing around $84,000, per DOI. More:

The Smithsonian Institution’s committee hearings were meant only to widen Donald Trump’s attack on the museum "by enlisting Congress in his efforts to reshape public memory," @ables_kelsey argues. theatlantic.com/culture/2026…
