🚨 Our AI Data Center Ecology Report is now available.
We’ve researched the rapid expansion of AI data centers, their growing demand for electricity and water, their impact on local communities, and the policies driving this growth.

A thread 🧵
On @MANOVA_Magazin_ we got into what all this AI compute is actually being built for.
Planned AI data centers could demand around 200 GW, roughly 40% of today’s U.S. power supply, while AI is increasingly being framed as national-security infrastructure in a race with China.
AI data centers aren’t just being built to answer prompts.
They can support robotics, cyber-defense, massive surveillance systems, and an international race for AI dominance.
That changes the conversation around expanding infrastructure.

What happens when the infrastructure we rely on becomes infrastructure for tracking us?
Hakeem joined @Geopolitics_Emp to discuss surveillance, digital ID, AI and how community and privacy-focused tools can help us protect our autonomy.
Hakeem Anwar of @abovephone and @takebackourtech discusses the rapid global expansion of the control grid, highlighting how governments and corporate entities are aggressively laying the infrastructure for surveillance, including the multi-billion-dollar BEAD Program for expanding satellite and fiber internet access to enforce digital ID and tracking. Furthermore, the conversation looks at the troubling rise of AI-driven automation. Hakeem emphasizes the vital importance of community, digital sovereignty, urging individuals to adopt privacy-focused technology, alternative communication devices, and cash-based barter systems to protect their personal autonomy. 📲🛂

Hakeem Anwar of @abovephone is showing a more private and sustainable way to use AI: Keep the model on your own computer.
Your questions stay on your machine instead of going out to someone else’s servers.
You can also pick a model trained on sources you trust.

Some energy developers build out land, power, and water infrastructure before they even have a confirmed tech tenant.
Entire communities can be reshaped around a project that is still speculative.

One of the most important ways to push back on digital surveillance is to switch to local solutions and private technology.
Hakeem Anwar @abovephone has a free 260-page report with guides on stripping the AI layer off phones and laptops, then using local AI instead of being used by it.

Speaking with @Geopolitics_Emp about the AI data-center boom: what happens when countries without their own infrastructure become dependent on foreign compute?

Hakeem Anwar @abovephone explains that before the AI data-center buildout, the world’s ordinary internet load was handled without the kind of strain we are now seeing.
The new facilities are already causing real problems.
And they still are not being open about how much they consume, or what they are really being built for.
Want more practical tips and tools to help identify proposed data centers in your area?
In this lesson from the AI Data Center Ecology webinar, we walk through the entire development process.
Statewide data-center moratoriums keep stalling.
Locally, it’s a different story: we found 69 city, county, and town moratoriums, with 50 still active.

Maine lawmakers approved an 18-month pause on data centers and the governor vetoed it.
The fight over slowing this buildout is happening right now.

Talking data centers and flock cameras with @Geopolitics_Emp by the time surveillance hardware goes up, the fight has already moved pretty far down the road.
These systems get approved somewhere. Get organized before your city council or county commission say yes.
With data centers flooding grids with requests, some regions won’t be able to meet future demand. So what does it mean for us when our grid can’t handle the load?

Hakeem Anwar of @abovephone explains the strategic positioning of data centers.
They cluster on major U.S. aquifers and within a few miles of high-voltage lines.
Then they harvest cheap resources at the public’s expense.

In a conversation with @Decentralize_TV we talked about the argument used to justify the AI buildout: we can’t slow down, China might get there first.
But if the answer is to drain more water, burn more power, and embed AI into every system what exactly are we racing toward?
