October.. Mild, wet .. but sunny !
We’ll be releasing the full October 2026 statistics on Mon 2 Nov But early provisional Met Office statistics show that October has seen: - Above average UK temperatures - Above average UK rainfall - Above average UK sunshine There is much regional variation in these figures, and we’ll explain all on Monday

Really enjoying photographing these Rosey bonnets (Mycena rosea) atm, they all have their own varying shades of pink , cap shape and striations (hopefully I haven't got two of the same photos 🙄) 🍄🤩 #wushroomwednesday #wednesdaymorning #macro #fungi #nature #naturephotography

We’ve admitted 27 hedgehogs in the last 72hours, with over 90 now on site! Please bear with us if replies to messages and patient update requests are a little slower than usual. Our small team is juggling everything, and our priority is the hedgehogs on site 🫶

I can never resist posting the rare and unusual Hazel Gloves Fungus (Hypocreopsis rhododendri) when I see it. This was in a fragment of South Wales temperate rainforest. 27/10/26 #fungi

Good morning 🍄 This is one of the most bizarre mushrooms on the planet!! It’s called The Devil’s Cigar or Chorioactis geaster. Its only found in two very distinct places on earth, 16 counties in central and northern Texas, and in 2 locales in Japan and Taiwan. Another thing that makes these guys so unique is when they’re ready to sporulate they open up and make a hissing/whistling sound while forcibly discharging its spores. A 2004 study determined these mushrooms diverged over 19 million years ago. Yet the species only exists in two places over 11,000 kilometers apart 🫪

These Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) clearly don’t know what month it is, or don’t read ‘the books’. Flowers April-June. 🤔 Surrey pine woodland, this week. #WildflowerHour @wildflower_hour

Please don't leave Halloween pumpkins to rot in your garden, or dump them in the countryside. Eating pumpkins can make hedgehogs, birds and other animals poorly. Instead, dispose of pumpkins in a covered compost bin or council food waste bin. More: littlegreenspace.org.uk/feat…

All sorts of fungi making the most of the moist decomposition out in the woods. A cut-back of gorse appears to suit the fly agaric very well!

What a load of nonsense!😂 Quite inventive! Are you financed by fox hunters or farmers, by any chance? Please stop spreading this misinformation. It does no one any good and just encourages hedgehog lovers to hate and be afraid of badgers. Badgers and hedgehogs have lived peaceably together side by side for 125,000 years. The badgers didn't suddenly decide to go on a hedgehog murdering spree, you know.🙄 They are incredibly tolerant of each other. Their diets are similar so they compete for food, but without aggression. This iniquitous rumour about badgers is spread by the deviants who enjoy torturing and killing animals, hoping to get hedgehog lovers to validate their depravity. Badgers are NOT hunters, you don't need a degree in zoology to know that, you only have to look at their body shape, their eye position, and sweet lumbering gait.😁 They are foragers, and 80% of their diet is earthworms. Of course any animal dying of starvation will act unnaturally, if that's the only way to survive. Humans have been know to eat each other, in extremis. So a starving badger may attempt predating a hedgehog, or any other animal, if it's risk that or death. That doesn't mean anything. Hedgehogs are no more part of badger's natural diet as mud is to a starving third world child. And as for the 'hollowed-out skins' - dear me, this is so ignorant. Anyone with even a passing knowledge of badger dentition knows this is impossible, utter nonsense. These empty skins are sadly all what's left of dead hedgehog, whose cause of death is usually parasite invasion or starvation, after birds - corvids mainly - have finished scavenging the corpse. See all those little dimples? They are peck marks. And badgers don't have beaks.😊

Nature Twitter is a shining beacon of light It stands tall, resolute as lights are going out all over the world The answer is not to dim the light, it is to shine ever brighter, so people know where the good is

My favourite oak fact: The leaves of an oak tree get successively larger the further down you go This allows all leaves access to sunlight, and protect the tree from excessive wind Oak trees know
