IITGN is pleased to share that ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ต๐ฏ๐ต๐ฎ๐ถ ๐ง๐ต๐ฎ๐ธ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ฟ has been awarded the ๐๐๐ ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ถ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฑ, one of the most prestigious recognitions for doctoral research in computer science and related disciplines in the country.
Dharaben completed her PhD at IITGN under the supervision of ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐. Her dissertation, titled โOn Computing Optimal Representations of Finite Groupsโ, makes landmark contributions to computational group theory. Her work resolves several long-standing open problems, including showing for the first time that the minimal generating set problem for finite groups can be solved in polynomial time, a question that remained open for nearly 70 years. She also developed highly efficient data structures for representing finite groups and advanced the understanding of permutation representations for important classes of groups.
The ACM India Doctoral Dissertation Award, instituted in 2011, recognises the best doctoral dissertation produced at an Indian institution each year. The award includes a cash prize, and the winning dissertation is published in the ACM Digital Library, with financial support from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
This achievement reflects the strength of research and mentorship at IITGN and reinforces the Instituteโs commitment to advancing foundational research with global impact.

1/n. Resuming thread on graduating students.
Meet @rishihere, who just completed his PhD in Computer Science from IIT Gandhinagar. His research focuses on making health sensing ubiquitous low-cost, scalable, and real-world deployable.
6/n
Rishiraj was a finalist for the ACM UbiComp Gaetano Borriello Outstanding Student Award, given to PhD students making outstanding contributions to ubiquitous computing and society.
The algo guarantees a 2-approx for pairs that are at least k apart. We (Manoj) present the first significant improvement in over 25 years: our algo runs in similar time but works for much closer pairsโthose just ~logโฏk apart. Single author FOCS. 2/n @cse_iitgn
Yet another foundational result from the dept by Manoj Gupta. In his words-- A foundational result by Dor, Halperin, and Zwick (FOCS '96, SICOMP '00) gave a near-quadratic time algorithm (~Vยฒ) for computing approximate shortest paths between all vertex pairs. 1/n.
Will try to do a series of posts featuring our graduating phd students from @cse_iitgn @iitgn.
First is Dhara Thakkar. @DharaThakkar. Coming from a modest background, she has done spectacularly in her phd. She has solved long standing problems, and already won acclaims 1/N.
