Linus Torvalds used AI on the kernel this month, and the use that stood out wasn't writing code. It was understanding old code and testing it. The bug someone reported: confirmed. Plus 3 more, all sitting in that library since its first commit. In 2013. In his words, the code was "too obscure for me to follow", so he used LLM tools to make sense of it, then ran it through a test harness. Everyone is racing to generate more code. The guy who wrote Linux also pointed AI at checking the code that already exists.
