❗️🗣️| Roy Keane goes off on Manchester United’s owners on The Overlap
“They bought a football club and turned it into a spreadsheet. The Glazers didn’t fall in love with the club. They looked at the numbers, saw the revenue, saw the global brand, and thought here’s a machine we can strip for parts. That’s not ownership. That’s asset management with a scarf on.”
“I played for that club when it meant something. You walked through those doors and you felt the weight of it — the history, the people who’d bled for that name before you. Sir Matt Busby built something out of rubble after Munich. The fans carried it through the wilderness years. Alex Ferguson turned it into the biggest club in England, maybe the world”
“None of that was about money. It was about identity. Then the Glazers came in with their leveraged buyout and loaded the club with debt to pay for their own purchase.”
“Think about that. They used the club’s own money to buy the club. Every year since, the profits that should’ve gone into the pitch, into the academy, into keeping the best players, went to servicing that debt and paying dividends.”
“Seventeen years of it. And when the fans finally had enough — when they broke into their own ground to say enough is enough — the Glazers didn’t listen. They just put the club up for sale like it was a house they were tired of. No apology. No accountability. Just a press release.”
“Then along comes Sir Jim Ratcliffe. And I thought, finally, someone with football in his blood. Ineos. A serious operation. A man who’s won trophies in other sports. Surely he’ll understand what this club is.”
“But what did we get? We got the same thing wearing a different badge. Ratcliffe came in talking about efficiency, about cutting costs, about restructuring. He started selling off pieces of the club’s soul — minority stakes, commercial rights, the very things that made United feel like United.”
“He brought in his own people, his own culture, his Ineos way of doing things, as if a football club is a chemical plant that just needs better management. It’s not. It’s a living thing. It’s the fans, the history, the noise on a Saturday afternoon. You can’t spreadsheet that.”
“And here’s the part that really gets me. The Glazers and Ratcliffe are two sides of the same coin. One group bought the club to extract money. The other bought in to run it like a business. Neither group asked the fans what they wanted.”
“Neither group sat in the stands and felt what it’s like when United win. They talk about passion from boardrooms. They talk about the club’s future while making decisions that hollow it out from the inside. The Glazers took the money. Ratcliffe is taking the identity. And the fans are left holding the ticket stub for a club that doesn’t exist anymore.”
“I don’t recognise this team. I don’t recognise this club. They’re chopping and changing and getting rid of everyone in the background which is fine, there’s a business side to it, we know that. But when we’re discussing Man United these days, it’s more like a business than a football club.”

Is there a better case in football right now to fail the Ownership, Director & Senior Executive test than Manchester United?
The Independent Football Regulator can issue a formal order to enforce the sale of a football club. How can they possibly be deemed competent?

Most Manchester United fans think the Glazers started ruining football clubs in 2005, what they don’t realize is that United was just the ultimate prize in a decades-long history of corporate raiding and greenmail.
Before Malcolm Glazer ever stepped foot on Old Trafford, his entire playbook was built on amassing massive targeted stakes in unsuspecting companies, creating chaos for their boards, and forcing lucrative buyouts
- Formica (1988): Acquired a heavy stake to corner management into defensive buyouts.
- Harley-Davidson (1989): Snagged ~7% of shares, triggering corporate panic until the board reshuffled to protect itself.
- Tonka Toys & Brunswick: Hunted consumer icons, using leverage and board friction for cash extractions.
- Zapata Corp (1992): Bought 38.8% out of nowhere, waged war against the board, hijacked control, and gutted its balance sheet.
When the Glazers turned to Manchester United, they executed the ultimate greenmail evolution - instead of taking a payout to go away, they bought the club, saddled it with over £500M in debt, and made United fund its own hostiles.
The parallels to our situation today are undeniable
- Value Extraction Over Asset Health: Greenmail prioritizes short-term cash over long-term stability. While Old Trafford and Carrington eroded, hundreds of millions flowed out in dividends and interest payments.
- Leverage as a Hostage Fee: The 2005 LBO forced United to pay for its own takeover. Glazers put up virtually zero personal equity.
- Partial Buyouts & Fractional Control: Look at the INEOS / Sir Jim Ratcliffe transaction. Instead of exiting, they sold a 25% minority slice at an inflated valuation to fund infrastructure they neglected for 20 years, all while hanging onto B-class voting control.
We aren't just dealing with poor football ownership. We are witnessing a textbook corporate greenmail campaign executed on a global institution.

It doesn’t matter who is linked with becoming Manchester United manager, because whatever the name (and most of those in circulation have previously already been ruled out), they are set up to fail.
The parasitic Glazer ownership has bled and broken the club, putting a financial noose around it.
In 2024, Sir Jim Ratcliffe talked a big game about a “three-year plan” to rival and outdo Manchester City and Liverpool. But the decision-making under INEOS’ charge of football operations has not just been woeful, but costly too. There is zero accountability for expensive mistake after expensive mistake.
There is still no clear direction on club identity, including style of play, which leads to profiling the right signings and manager. That was a major promise made by Ratcliffe, which hasn’t been kept.
To borrow his own words: “There have been a whole series of coaches, some of which were very good. And none of them were successful, or survived for very long.
The only conclusion you can draw is that the environment in which they were working didn’t work.”
It still doesn’t. It never will as long as the people who own and run the club betray Manchester United and what is required to be successful in the modern era.
You can harp on about structure, vision, and sell fanciful projects, but you will never have the right operation with the wrong people.

£1.012 billion paid by Manchester United on the Glazer debt saddled on the club in the leveraged buyout. £170 million paid out in dividends. Not a single penny of their own money put in. Financially hamstrung due to years of theft & failure.
Whatever this is, is what is left.

🚨 JUST IN - Fabrizio Romano on the THREE names that will be STRONGLY linked with the Man Utd managerial job if Carrick gets sacked:
"Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann, and Fabian Hürzeler.
"Conte — would be ready this year to take a job mid-season.
"Nagelsmann — INEOS already considered him in the past, but he was under contract with Germany, but now he's FREE.
"Hürzeler — United have someone in their board who REALLY appreciates him, but he's completely focused on Brighton.
"Also, Eddie Howe is FREE after leaving Newcastle, and he knows the league so well." [@FabrizioRomano, YT]

Marcus Rashford was given a new contract for one reason only which of course was never disclosed to him. He was having a great season during the time the club was put up for sale and the Glazers didn’t want to lose an asset of that value and it affect the sale price, exactly the same thing they did with Mason Greenwood. They told Rashford how important he was, what they planned to do with the team and how much the club loved him, meanwhile Omar Berrarda was offering him significantly more to come to City but he decided to stay with his boyhood club. Once INEOS came in, they looked at those players transactionally and wanted them out. If they had’ve just been honest with players and said “we don’t really care about you, we just want to make more money from the sale of this football club and you being under contract helps us do that” then none of this would have happened. Subsequently they could’ve offered to cancel his contract but they didn’t because he can make them money in a sale. Undoubtedly Marcus Rashford made his own mistakes which he will readily admit to but when your employer is working hand in glove with individuals who are abusing you and your family then it tends to fracture the relationship a bit. I once asked Utd why they did that and the individual said (I kid you not) “well people have to work with Fox News”.
