American military spending is only possible because the dollar is the reserve currency. This is not an opinion. It is arithmetic. The United States runs persistent deficits that would be unsustainable for any other country. It finances those deficits by issuing Treasury bonds. Foreign central banks buy those bonds because they need dollar-denominated assets for their reserves. They need dollar-denominated reserves because the dollar is the currency of global trade. The circle is closed. Military spending → deficit → Treasury bonds → foreign purchase → dollar demand → reserve currency status → military spending. Break any link in that chain and the whole logic shifts. This is why dedollarization is not just an economic story. It is the foundational strategic threat to American military primacy. Not Russian missiles. Not Chinese carriers. Foreign central banks deciding to hold a more diversified reserve portfolio. The most important battlefield of this century looks like a spreadsheet. The side that understands this is already fighting.

The uranium in the Hiroshima bomb. Shinkolobwe mine. Belgian Congo. The uranium that ended World War II and inaugurated the nuclear age and gave the United States its defining geopolitical advantage for the following decade: Came from African ground. Mined by African labor. Under Belgian colonial administration. The Congolese miners who extracted it had no idea what it was for. They received no benefit from what it produced. The geopolitical order it enabled, American dominance, the Cold War architecture, the entire post-war system under which African independence was managed and constrained: Was built in part on Congolese uranium. And then that same geopolitical order looked at the Congo and saw a country that needed to be guided toward development. The country that provided the material for the weapon that shaped the world was then subjected to the world the weapon shaped. Without acknowledgment. Without compensation. Without a single line in American education connecting Shinkolobwe to Hiroshima to the Cold War to Mobutu to the Congo today. The lines exist. They are documented. They are simply not drawn in the curriculum. Because drawn lines connect causes to effects. And connected causes and effects produce accountability.

One of Hitler's top military planners, accused by Moscow of the deadliest Nazi massacre of a single town, went on to chair NATO's Military Committee. His name was Adolf Heusinger. During WWII he headed the operations department of the German Army's General Staff and helped plan the invasion of the Soviet Union, after the campaigns against Poland, Norway and France. In March 1943, Nazi occupation forces massacred some 7,000 civilians in Koryukivka, Soviet Ukraine, burning most of the town to the ground. After the war Heusinger worked for the Gehlen Organization, the US-backed intelligence network of former Wehrmacht officers, and helped build the new West German army. In 1961 he became chairman of NATO's Military Committee, the alliance's top military post, with an office in the Pentagon. The Soviet Union identified Heusinger as responsible for the Koryukivka massacre and demanded his extradition. Washington refused, and Heusinger kept the NATO job until 1964. He was never prosecuted for Koryukivka.

Here is the thing about China that American strategic culture has never been able to fully process: It is not a country that is trying to become something else. The entire framework of American engagement with China since Nixon has rested on a theory, explicit in the 1990s, implicit before and after, that a developing China would inevitably converge toward Western liberal political economy. That capitalism would produce democracy. That prosperity would produce demands for political rights that the Communist Party could not contain. That China was on a path, and the path led, eventually, to something Washington would recognize and could work with. This was not analysis. It was hope dressed as analysis. China's leadership never shared this theory of their own trajectory. They were never on the path Washington was watching for. They were on their own path, pursuing their own model, on their own timeline, with their own goals. The shock in Washington when this became undeniable in the 2010s was not a strategic miscalculation. It was the moment the hope structure collapsed. And a foreign policy built on hope, when the hope fails, produces something that looks a great deal like panic.

Understand what a compliant China would have meant. Not just strategically. Economically. The largest consumer market on earth, opened on American terms. The manufacturing base of Asia, structured to serve American capital. A military ally anchoring the Western Pacific. A permanent American presence at the edge of the Soviet Union's eastern flank. This was not a fantasy. This was the plan. This was what Washington spent billions supporting the Kuomintang to achieve. The plan failed. Completely, irreversibly, and publicly. And the alternative that emerged, a China explicitly committed to its own development on its own terms, hostile to the architecture of American-managed Asian order, has never stopped being, at the core of American strategic anxiety, the thing that went wrong. Everything since, the refusal to recognize the PRC for three decades, the Korean War, the Taiwan Strait crises, the American war in Vietnam, the encirclement strategy, the current technology war, is the long aftermath of 1949. The plan failed. Washington never fully accepted that the failure was permanent.

„Made in China“ steht hierzulande für billig Ware.

The Chinese Revolution was not clean. Nothing that emerges from a century of colonial humiliation, decades of civil war, and the specific conditions of mid-20th century China was going to be clean. The deaths were real. The coercion was real. The suppression of dissent, the destruction of the Cultural Revolution, the specific and irreplaceable things that were lost: these are real and they matter, and the Chinese people who lived through them are not plot devices in anyone’s geopolitical story. But here is the other truth, the one that sits alongside it: China is not a colony. China was not carved into spheres of influence for the convenience of foreign capital. China was not kept poor and dependent and "open" in the specific way that "open" means when powerful countries say it about weaker ones. China made its own catastrophic decisions, on its own terms, and rebuilt from them on its own terms. That sovereignty, costly, contested, imperfect, real, is what the revolution purchased. Whether the price was worth it is a question the Chinese people get to answer. Not the people who were planning to own the country. Not the people who are still angry that they don’t.

Had the Kuomintang won, China would be ruled from Washington. Its ports patrolled. Its elections supervised. Its economy opened like a carcass. Mao did not just defeat an army. He prevented a century of American ownership. That is why they still hate him. Not because of what he built. But because of what he denied them.

They will tell you Mao’s China was isolated and paranoid and turned inward in ways that impoverished its people. They will not tell you that the isolation was substantially enforced from outside. American-led embargo. Exclusion from the United Nations until 1971. Diplomatic non-recognition. The systematic attempt to strangle an economy of 600 million people because their government had been chosen without American approval. When the isolation produced poverty, the poverty was cited as evidence of communism’s failure. The embargo that enforced the isolation was not cited at all. This is the same logic applied to Cuba, to Vietnam, to Iran, to the DPRK. Impose the conditions that make development difficult. Point to the difficulty as proof that the political system doesn’t work. Use that proof to justify maintaining the conditions. It is a clean loop. It requires only that the people inside it never look at what’s producing what.

The ideological function of the Cuba argument is not primarily about Cuba. Cuba has 11 million people and an economy the size of a mid-sized American city. The function is to make any alternative to the existing economic order look like this: Shortages. Lines. Restrictions. Decay. So that when workers in any country begin asking whether a different arrangement might be possible, when they look at their own wages and their own conditions and begin wondering aloud who the economy is actually organized to benefit, there is a ready image. "You want Cuba? That’s what you want?" Cuba, the small island nation strangled by six decades of sanctions, is made to represent the ceiling of what any alternative can achieve. Not because the evidence supports that conclusion. Because the sanctions helped manufacture it. The image is a product. A very expensive, very deliberately produced product. Paid for, in part, by ordinary Cubans who had nothing to do with the argument being made over their heads.

Imagine China "opening" without Mao’s revolution: Opening to U.S. corporations. Opening to foreign troops. Opening to the same fate that befell every Asian nation that lost its war for independence. Japan lost and became a host. South Korea lost and became a shield. China won. And became itself.

Donald Trump: ‘Let’s make Venezuela🇻🇪 the 51st state, and instead of an election for President we will have an election for Governor.’ Delcy Rodriguez and her coterie sold out the country, its President, and its resources to become Viceroys of a Washington colony… And now the US President openly flirts with the idea of annexing the entire country and erasing Venezuelan sovereignty completely. History will not look kindly upon them.
