Happy World Book Day! Today I’m reading Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell. It’s about the death of Shakespeare’s son from plague in C16th Stratford Upon Avon. Tissues essential. See the thread for other teachers’ choices...1
Mrs Edmondson is reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman - this is one of my favourites too. Just so, so funny and heartwarming, in the best way.
This is a great little video introducing the work of James Baldwin - a brilliant writer who has something for everybody. If you prefer non-fic to novels, you can pick up some of his essays in a £1 edition from @PenguinUKBooks 📚
Have you read anything by James Baldwin? Here's how his writing and activism helped shape the Civil Rights movement in the US: t.ted.com/oELoxhJ #BlackHistoryMonth
Just had another great discussion in the KS3 book club - thanks to those who joined in 🙂 The next book (chosen by Robert) is Gone by Michael Grant. I’ve read it before and it is a banger 🧨
In Our Time is a brilliant resource - I love their literary episodes. Look on BBC Sounds and search for the Macbeth episode if you’re in Y7 and studying it now. A Level students, look out for episodes on Aristotle’s Poetics (link on Google Classroom now) 🤓
Y11 - check your Google Classroom for a link to this and watch Romeo and Juliet as told by Michael Morpurgo. 🙂
Introduce students to some of Shakespeare's best-loved plays for FREE with our Schools' Broadcasts of Michael Morpurgo’s Tales from Shakespeare. Perfect for #homelearning✨

Something soothing to listen to for Y11s preparing for their Lit mock tomorrow. The stars are a constant reference in R&J - Romeo feels ‘some consequence yet hanging in the stars’ and later vows ‘I defy you stars’. In C16th stars ✨ = fate
Really fascinating for thinking about the role of astrology -- the "stars" -- in Shakespeare.
Key insight: astrology wasn't in opposition to religion. It was one way of thinking about how God's universe operates.
