According to Canada's broadcasting ethics council, it is not a violation of journalistic standards to omit that a regular "expert" guest on @CTVNews is actually a fellow for an organization funded by Israel.
Joe Varner received an all-expenses-paid trip to Israel.
Twice in the past month, @CTVNews has invited @josephbvarner to pitch continuing war on Iran. Both times, CTV failed to disclose that he is an Exigent Foundation fellow.
The Exigent Foundation is a Canadian pro-Israel org that is covertly funded by the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

Faculty for Palestine Canada Condemns Israeli Military Attacks on the Islamic University of Gaza and the Continuing Scholasticide Across Palestine

We have written to the CBC requesting a change to the misleading title of their article "Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran."
What the investigation in the article confirms is that the shootings are linked by a multi-layered gun-for-hire network.
What is not established through the facts in the article is any concrete link to Iran. Instead, this appears to be entirely in reference to intelligence reports from Canada (CSIS), the FBI, and the UK, which have raised concerns regarding alleged Iranian-linked plots against Jewish-Canadians. These reports themselves originate from an American federal court complaint which alleges that two attacks in Canada were ordered by an Iraqi national named Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al-Saadi with potential links to Iran, who had been arrested in Turkey and extradited to the United States. The complaint cites multiple conversations between al-Saadi and an undercover FBI agent. These are allegations based on undercover FBI operations, not criminal findings.
Given the fact that the courts have not decided on a verdict, there is still no conclusive evidence connecting Iran to the shootings in Canada.
Unfortunately, the article does not discuss the unconfirmed status of these allegations, but appears to treat them as sufficient evidence to support the article’s thesis, as reflected in the article’s title.
Reporting this as “likely” based on the evidence to date unfortunately adds fuel to rising Islamophobia in Canada, whose proponents use these anti-Iran conspiracies to normalize and justify anti-Muslim hate.
Today CBC published an article with the headline: “Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran.”
I was intrigued, as there has been almost 0 evidence offered for this claim thus far.
Unfortunately this article doesn’t offer any either, adding nothing new. CBC says they spent weeks on the investigation, so these are pretty pitiful results, at least in terms of finding evidence of who paid for the shootings.
I’m not sure why they feel comfortable with such a declarative headline given the lack of evidence (other than journalistic standards going out the window when the subject is an Official Enemy country).
Also, CBC and other journalists continue platforming police claims that they need backdoor access to messaging apps to solve these shootings, with no push back or critique about how these powers can be abused, including against journalists.

Another day, more dropped charges for anti-genocide protesters after being dragged through the system. More than 2 years after a sit-in protest at a Montreal Scotiabank branch demanding that the bank divest from Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems, 14 protesters saw their charges dropped by the Crown. This follows a pattern across Canada of using process to punish activists, even when there is no reasonable prospect of conviction.
Scotiabank has now divested from Elbit Systems, demonstrating the power of sustained collective action. Using Charter rights to stand against genocide and war crimes should be celebrated and protected, not punished.

After being 'battle-tested' on Palestinians under occupation, a drone from Israeli weapons company Elbit Systems is about to start surveilling the Arctic as part of the Canadian Coast Guard. We continue to call on Canada to cancel all contracts with this company, which a UN report has named as being complicit in genocide.

More than two years after the International Court of Justice found Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory unlawful, Canada continues to engage in military cooperation with Israel. This includes hosting an Israeli military attaché under the Canada-Israel Strategic Partnership.
In August 2023, a Col. Liron Biton took command of the IOF's Binyamin Brigade in the West Bank. The brigade covers the region of Mateh Binyamin, where over 40 Israeli settlements and outposts are located – sites that Canada has acknowledged are a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and has described as "a serious obstacle to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace."
Is this the same Col. Liron Biton who has been accredited by Global Affairs Canada? @CanadaFP

BRIEF TO THE STANDING SENATE COMMITTEE ON ABORIGINAL PEOPLES ON BILL C-15 - UNITED NATIONS
DECLARATION ON THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES ACT - May 14, 2021 1/3
After significant community concern and advocacy, including much engagement by many Canadians, including NCCM, the Government of Canada has clarified in a response letter that anti-Zionism is not inherently antisemitic, reaffirming Canadians’ right to engage in open, respectful, and lawful debate about Israel, its government policies, and any political ideology.
In its response to NCCM on October 16th, the Minister of Public Safety reaffirmed that the Report is not intended to suggest that all criticism of Zionism or Israel is antisemitic, nor to limit or discourage lawful political expression and public debate.
While this clarification is a step in the right direction, many in our community remain concerned about the IHRA definition and how it may be applied in practice to chill legitimate political speech, even though the federal government states that it is non-prescriptive guidance and does not restrict Charter-protected freedoms.
Many Canadians have lost their jobs for innocuous statements critiquing Israel. We’ve taken many of these cases to court to protect their rights and have won.
We will continue to advocate for the protection of civil liberties, freedom of expression, and the right of all Canadians to engage in legitimate political debate without fear of having their views unfairly characterized.

Anti-Zionism is not antisemitism! Public Safety Canada has described anti-Zionism as a form of antisemitism.
This sets a dangerous precedent for Palestinian rights.

Last week, Public Safety Canada said that anti-Zionism is a form of antisemitism. This is a dangerous distortion of the definition of antisemitism. It confuses the public about the true nature of antisemitism, erases Jewish anti-Zionist histories, and promotes anti-Palestinian racism. The fact that this came from Public Safety Canada is deeply troubling, as it will have a direct impact on how expressions of Palestine solidarity is policed.
We know that, far from being a form of bigoted hatred, anti-Zionism is an affirmation of the rights of all people to live in peace and dignity. We need to make it clear that Public Safety Canada's misdefinition is unacceptable, and that Canadians from all walks of life do not want antisemitism to be weaponized to silence voices speaking out in support of Palestinian human rights. CJPME's media advocacy efforts worked: @CBCNews overhauled its story about the controversial CASE antisemitism report comissioned by @CdnHeritage.
After CBC admitted to initially stealth-editing the piece, editor's notes were added. The subheading, photo captions, and text were edited to reflect the limits of the survey. Additional context about the CASE report's biased definitions are now included.
As detailed by @TheGrindTO, there is still more to fix. CJPME has an active file with the CBC Ombuds in order to completely correct the record.
