Even before Iโ€™d got out of my car yesterday, a local visited to welcome me back.

Of course, there was that final clock to put back an hour. It catches me out every time! ๐Ÿ˜„

The temperature inside the caravan was a less than welcoming 9ยฐC. Iโ€™ve now improved considerably on that but Iโ€™m also pleased that I brought back a selection of winter woolies Iโ€™d taken home to wash. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Back in my happy, albeit chilly, place for the first time in a fortnight. Arrived a little before 4pm, about an hour earlier than I have been doing. Gave me a tiny window (pun intended) to open the curtains before the daylight disappeared.

As itโ€™s a fortnight since my car has moved and only switched on once, I went out earlier to check it and reset the clock! Started first time and the battery was in high 11s before start & 14.1V when running. Well done, little Aygo X, you put the two previous Yaris(es?) to shame!

Iโ€™m assuming later models of Yaris also have an improved battery (hopefully). As for the clock, it now has a โ€œset time automaticallyโ€ slider that acknowledges daylight savings time. Result!

Today, another attempt and I had to get it to check again after another wrong answer. This time I asked why it got it wrong so often and got AIsplained! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Two days ago I asked the new improved Siri Intelligence for the date in 84 daysโ€™ time. It got it hopelessly wrong so I asked โ€œare you sure?โ€ And it immediately replied with the correct answer. Itโ€™s still getting it wrong far more times than it should. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Born in 1835 and renowned for writing the adventures of Huckleberry Finn & Tom Sawyer, this is a rare colour photo of American author Mark Twain 118 years ago. He's wearing his Oxford University robes after receiving an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree from the University of Oxford on 26th June 1907. I have cleaned-up this Autochrome study by Alvin Langdon Coburn, which used an early colour glass-plate process. It's not colourised

Just been given this vinegary print in a very rusty can. I think itโ€™s an answer print of Arrival, and thus possibly the first print of The Prisoner ever made.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we werenโ€™t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. โ€œBut Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to riskโ€”getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?โ€. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in Londonโ€™s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield
