The COVID-19 #pandemic has exacerbated a pre-existing shortage of school counselors at a time when more students than ever say they need #mentalhealth support.
Our #studentjournalists covered the counselor shortage with ex-@USATODAY reporter @alangomez:

Look who came to visit!!! Miami-based mentor-editor and former @USATODAY correspondent @alangomez stopped by Coral Reef Senior High School to teach news writing to the journalism club. UHMP bootcamp alums Krystal Li and Justin Fernandez met him live and in person! Finally!!
It’s been a year since I left @USATODAY and many of you have been asking what I’ve been up to. I’ve been exploring careers I always considered but never had the time (or guts) to try: teaching, fiction writing, and now voice acting.
And today, I’m stepping into a whole new world: voice acting. Think audiobooks and narrating videos and documentaries. I’ve been training and practicing and building out my home studio. It’s ready and I’m ready to take this leap.
If you want to check out my new website, here’s the link: alanrgomez.com. And if you know anyone who needs a voice actor, send them my way.
Some personal news: After 14 amazing years with @USATODAY, I’m stepping away from the paper – and journalism – to explore some new adventures. No news yet on what’s to come, but I can’t leave without thanking a few people.
And a sincere thank you to all the people who trusted me to tell their stories. When I think back at the risks that so many took to share their deepest secrets, their personal tales (and their internal documents), it truly humbles me. I hope I mostly got it all right.

Spent the morning visiting polling locations in Miami and saw two clear trends:
- Little to no line, even at larger locations.
- A MAGA truck parked outside each site.
