I wrote about the revelatory filmography of Peter Bundy, who ought to be known as one of the great American experimental filmmakers of the late 70s/early 80s Four of his films streaming on Ultra Dogme (online for the first time ever) and others this wknd at Tone Glow Film Fest

Fear of looking stupid for liking (or disliking) something is a fatal flaw for a critic, but also one that’s encouraged by a media culture where every writer has to be their own advocate on social media

The best writer friendships and group chats I’m in have a healthy dynamic where one person can think something is terrible and another love it and both be curious and respectful about the disagreement. Twitter is…not like that

Apart from its other virtues, a regular encounter with the avant garde can be a good therapy for bad ways of thinking about more conventional forms

people who want film viewing to be an epistemological exercise should just watch David Gatten films
I find most discussions of the truth status and parameters/boundaries of documentary filmmaking tedious in the same way I find most analytic philosophy tedious. Who cares! What does it *mean*?

To the extent these categories hold up usefully it’s as functional ones of how works ask to be engaged with. But even then the question doesn’t resolve itself into two categories called “narrative fiction” and “documentary film”

All documentaries are fiction films and aesthetic objects and all fiction films and aesthetic objects are documentaries. So many analyses obfuscate more than they reveal

you call bullshit when you see bullshit imo, it’s not about maintaining your purity it’s about maintaining a critical standpoint
the thing that fucking sucks about generative AI is that it is basically infeasible to *not* unknowingly engage with it if you love art. You will love a movie with AI involved in its creation; you already do! And I don't know what to do about that!

we can’t resolve our historical contradictions individually we can only reveal and respond to them

Rhayne Vermette's film Levers is available to watch for free online this month on Equinox Film. It's apocalyptic, enigmatic, and feels relevant to our current times yet somehow exists outside of time. Well worth seeing. equinox.film/film/levers/

Every year in the summer I get tired of movies and every year in September I remember that I like them, just in time for October. Send me your seasonal genre deep cuts or festival standouts that I missed
