One day to go. On Thursday, over 1200 colleagues from over 109 countries meet for Session 1 of ‘From policy to practice: an introduction to perinatal mental health in East and Southern Africa and other LMICs.’ We will cover the burden and impact, the social determinants, human rights, evidence for impact and the economic case: the foundation for four practical sessions on integration, screening and referral, interventions and workforce, and scale. We will also ask participants what they want from the series. Their answers will shape what follows. Thursday 15 October · 14:00 CAT / 15:00 EAT

Did you know the term “health financing” is doing three jobs at once? It could mean catalytic funds that pull in government spending, costed cases that make scale-up fundable, or protection that stops a family paying at the door. That term stands for three different problems, with three different answers, yet we keep discussing them as one. Swipe through to understand how these three jobs are different. Thread: Malawi built its first midwifery-led ward over five years. Thirteen registered midwives and 20 nurse-midwife technicians, where comparable centers run two or three. The hard part wasn't the building, it was the Ministry endorsement and the scope of practice. → See below how they did it, and read the full abstract here: lnkd.in/dj44XDTr

Is the solution to the workforce problem just adding more healthcare workers? Add 3 nurses to an understaffed neonatal unit → care time available jumps 28%. Care actually delivered? Just 4.7%. Staffing alone doesn't fix a broken system. Culture, teamwork and data do. More in the thread ↓

In May 2023, a room in Cape Town changed how we think about our work. A trial showed simple, already-available interventions could cut severe bleeding after childbirth by 60%. Normally that evidence takes 10-17 years to become policy. This time it took 6 months. Why? Everyone who needed to act was already in the room. We're becoming Align: - dropping MNH from our name to widen that room. Health doesn't divide into neat categories, and neither should we.

What if we could save more lives by improving how proven interventions are delivered? Quality improvement bundles bring multiple evidence-based interventions together and, paired with strong feedback and audit systems, can drive measurable results. Examples from Sierra Leone, Nigeria & Ethiopia show reductions in stillbirths and neonatal deaths, alongside improved quality of care. Quality improvement can turn evidence into impact and give more families a chance at a healthy start.

Our community asked us to do more, and we listened. Six years building a movement, but global gains in maternal and newborn health are stalling as the ecosystem stays fragmented. Our new brand and website bridge those gaps, creating a space to connect, amplify, and accelerate. alignand.org
