This pre-code early talkie was the first major studio (MGM) feature film to have an all-black cast. It was a musical, featuring spirituals that were beautifully sung. There were some racial stereotypes, but it was shocking to see a movie directed by a white man in 1929 like this.

My family and I just came from shul for Yom Kipper and the sanctuary was full of Jews in kuffeyehs. Kuffeyehs are not antisemitic.
