The tariffs from China are not going to have a huge impact on the global economy per se. eg. Assume 200000 barrels of oil are exported to China from US a day at $100. That’s $3m in tariffs. Not good, but won’t be crazy bad. It’s gonna be ok.

Some observations about China’s economy after meeting old friends: 1) things are almost as bad as they seem. Anecdotally, women are returning 80% of the fast fashion they buy online. Restaurants are half full. General doom and gloom 2) EVs are the bright spot. Everywhere the latest sleek looking cars. Many households have 2, and BYD rules. Consensus is that BYD and Geely will survive, rest is maybe. 3) AI is the wild card that could still lead to overwhelming success. Everyone else is just treading water.

Memento Mori. It means remember that we will die. I saw this phrase on an arm tattoo of the lady who was serving me milk tea. In this new year that celebrates new things of all kinds, I am reminded of Steve Jobs telling us that someday we too will be cleared away. Seize the day.
