Getting rid of the independent Fact-Checking program is the best thing Meta has ever done. For those who are unfamiliar, it allowed a handful of journalists at media outlets (overwhelmingly left wing) to apply Fact Checks directly on any content they wanted, which would immediately kill its reach. If you got more than 3 of these in a 90 day period, your page was effectively useless as it would no longer be recommended to non-followers.
This enabled a few unaccountable journalists to target people they didnโt like at will and I witnessed them do it while ignoring false claims coming from the left.
Now theyโve moved to a Community Notes style approach like ๐.
We canโt allow this progress to be undone, especially not at the behest of a Soros-backed AG.
A Soros-backed AG should not be the arbiter of free speech online.
Of course theyโre coming after โCommunity Notesโ style features and want to go back to โIndependent Fact Checkingโ because it will put control back into the hands of a select few that can be pressured by the government.
This sets a dangerous precedent.
