Anna M. Apffel, MD!!!!
Everything they say is true- the days are long but the years are short. I truly could not have done it without the people around me. Thank you to every person who played a part in this. See you in an OR in Pittsburgh soon!

A little friendly competition goes a long way! A great evening of games, laughs, and team building with our junior residents. Special thanks to our Interim Chair, @macky_neal , and the Neal family for hosting, and our Program Director, Dr. Lee, for joining in on the fun and bringing the competitive spirit! 🎲🏆

How do you save more people from bleeding to death?
Bleeding is a leading cause of trauma death, but it’s preventable. Pitt Trauma and Transfusion Medicine Research Center is working to answer that question and working on developing “Better blood,” The center’s work spans:
● Prehospital plasma and whole blood trials, bringing blood to patients before they reach the hospital
● Pediatric whole blood research and the MATIC-2 trial
● Cold-stored platelets that could last up to 21 days
● Microfluidic “transfusion on a chip” models of bleeding
● Freeze-dried synthetic platelets, with first-in-human trials targeted for2027
Congratulations to @macky_neal , @PhilSpinellaMD @Jjasonsperrymd Frank Guyette, Christine Leeper, @SMSheaLab and the entire TTMRC team on work that is changing how we care for patients with traumatic injury. Read the full story: pittmed.pitt.edu/news/trauma…

Grateful for the opportunity to serve as Interim Chair of @PittSurgery. For 27 yrs, Tim Billiar has built an extraordinary department & shaped generations of surgeons and scientists. It is a humbling privilege to help steward what he has built. Thank you, Tim. #Hail2Pitt @UPMC
A New Chapter in Pitt Surgery Leadership
Today marks an important transition for the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC.
After 27 years as Chair, Billiar Timothy, MD, will step down from the role effective September 30. It is difficult to capture the full impact of Dr. Billiar’s leadership in this post. Over nearly three decades, he has helped shape our department through his contributions to patient care, surgical education and research. He has trained generations of surgeons and surgeon-scientists, many of whom have gone on to leadership roles of their own. His scientific contributions, including more than 900 peer-reviewed publications and more than 35 years of continuous NIH funding, have had a lasting influence on the field of trauma and inflammation.
We are grateful that Dr. Billiar will continue his work at Pitt in his role as Distinguished Professor of Surgery and at UPMC as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer.
Congratulations to @macky_neal, Watson Chair and Professor of Surgery, on his appointment as interim chair. As a distinguished surgeon-scientist, educator and a busy general and trauma surgeon, Dr. Neal brings excellence in clinical care, translational research, and innovation to this new role.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Billiar for his exceptional service and welcoming Dr. Neal as he leads the department through this transition.
