This week, he received an unexpected tribute on Netflix's "The Diplomat." In the episode, a British character tells an American character how a soldier named Hershel Polin saved her father during World War II. The story mirrors what Hersh's friend Aner Shapira did in real life. During the Hamas massacre, Aner stood at the entrance of the bomb shelter they were hiding in and threw grenades back out, again and again. The eighth grenade exploded before he could throw it, and it killed him. The show was created and written by Debora Cahn, a descendant of Holocaust survivors who has spoken about how her Jewish heritage shapes the way she tells stories about the world. "It's striking to know there are many people around the world trying to ensure the stories of the hostages are not whitewashed or erased," said Hersh's mother, Rachel Goldberg-Polin.
