Between this and the rainfall paper @jon_mellon is becoming the new causal inference boogeyman. Looking forward to reading this one!
Just published on APSR First View: "Regularized Regression Can Reintroduce Backdoor Confounding: The Case of Mass Polarization" by Jonathan Mellon (@jon_mellon) and Christopher Prosser (@caprosser). cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Pretty messed up that a guy wins a Nobel prize when he’d be not-yet-up-for-tenure at some unis.
UChicago alum John Jumper, SM’12, PhD’17, shared the @NobelPrize in Chemistry for developing the AI model AlphaFold, which predicts the structure of proteins. He is the 100th member of the UChicago community to earn a Nobel Prize.

Fascinating discussion of new research by @sukrit_puri —>
In the latest episode of the 2024 job market series of @IdeasofIndia I speak with @sukrit_puri, a PhD candidate in political science @MIT about the entanglement between business and politics in India.
We talked about how family firms versus management run businesses give political contributions, the mandate for retroactive transparency in the electoral bond scheme, and much more. @mercatus

As ever, perceptions of whether a given attack in war is “precise” or “indiscriminate” align with people’s prior views of the perpetrator, esp for those not directly in the line of fire
I studied this years ago in the case of US drone strikes in Pakistan: jstor.org/stable/48597370
Actually giddy to see the American Community Survey in my mailbox this afternoon.
Does anyone know how I claim my share of the citations?

I'll be at #APSA2024 in Philly this week! I'm presenting a paper with @bm_read in a "mixed methods in CP" panel, and serving as discussant for a panel on civilian casualties in war.
Hit me up if you would like to meet!

Announcing an article authored avec an always amazing @ARGohdes ! "Civilian behavior on social media during civil war" @AJPS_Editor shows that civilians use social media strategically during civil war. Link: doi.org/10.1111/ajps.12899
How do you design credible, interesting social science research about politics?
I dunno, but hopefully some of the pieces on this (brand new) syllabus have the answer!
