Early results from the UK vaxx mixing study!
1. No major safety issues.
2. Mixing appears to cause more minor ache/fever side effects after second shot.
That doesn't mean mixing = better immunity, but it is plausible.
Full results expected in June.

The first message we should be sending to everyone who has received AZ:
Thank you for protecting yourselves and others. The success we are celebrating today is a direct result of the choice you made.

Canadians, if you got the AZ jab: (1) you didn't make a mistake; you got great protection when others did not; (2) you helped drive incidence down to the point where we have the luxury of vaccine choice; (3) you will likely get boosted by an mRNA vaccine, which will be just fine.

Love this graph from the amazing @jkwan_md. The faster and further the two top curves cross, the better. And NB: the faster that green curve rises w/ 2nd jabs for elderly & immunocompromised patients, the better.

What went wrong with NACI? I have a theory, hear me out:
NACI confused relative risk with absolute risk, a rookie mistake, IMHO.
Side effect risk is higher for AZ than Pfz. That's what NACI was saying, and they're technically right about that.

1/ A few points to clarify a few points...
These vaccines are really really good, but not perfect.
One dose of a vaccine provides excellent protection against #COVID19 infection, but of course 2 doses provide more protection.
We are seeing patients admitted to ICU with #COVID well after shot 1 and before shot 2.
One isn't vaccinated until fully vaccinated.
Given the significant delay between shots 1 & 2, clear communication on how to conduct oneself b/w shots from public health leaders would help.

Canada is now consistently ranked #2 among G20 countries for the rate of #COVID19 vaccines administered.🇨🇦
The job is far from finished but we are moving quickly in the right direction.

So you read today’s NACI advice - AZ ok if you’re 30+! Unless you can wait for mRNA 💉! And then you read the MANY hot takes from experts, non-experts, and para-experts. And you are SCARED. Let’s work through it. (The required reading is below). 1/n ema.europa.eu/en/documents/c…

THREAD on VARIANTS, VACCINES & POTENTIAL FUTURES:
I’ve been looking at data on sequenced variants. I’ve also been thinking about our vax programme & India.
TLDR: the Indian variant needs to trigger surge testing in England. And India needs to be on red list. 1/23

1/With the 4,456 new official Covid-19 cases in Ontario today and the majority of Covid-19 cases in Canada now being VOCs, maybe it's a good time to update what we know about transmission. Thanks to @DFisman for editing and fact-checking and @realsarahpolley for the inspiration.

1/ Eventually we will see a decoupling of new #COVID19 cases from hospitalizations as population-level immunity grows (through vaccination & recovery from natural infection), especially among those at greatest risk for more severe infections.
