Building payments in Africa teaches you quickly that the tech is the easy part.
Getting someone to trust you with their dollars and provide liquidity? That's the real job.
Audited books help. But what really moves capital is being able to see where the money goes and know it's coming back.
Trust is infrastructure too.
Capital follows legibility.
A lot of African builders don’t lack ambition or good ideas. They lack an understanding of how capital actually moves.
How institutions allocate money. How interest rates and monetary policy affect capital flows. How to build credit. Why audited financials matter. What makes a company legible to capital.
Had a very eye-opening conversation with a very smart lady about this. I think this is one of the biggest gaps among African builders.
Good day to debunk some misconceptions about how money actually works in the modern economy. Understanding how money is created changes how you see banks, debt, inflation, and the economy itself.

Africa does not need intellectuals who simply translate Western thinking into African languages.
We need scholars who begin with African experiences, challenge inherited assumptions, and produce ideas capable of changing the material conditions of our people.
After the Railway incident, I just started rotating 200+ secrets across all our services.
Nothing like spending your week figuring out which services are still using credentials you forgot existed.

One underrated consequence of infrastructure investment:
It doesn't just improve the economy that exists, it creates economies that didn't exist before.
I’ve been following where the money is going in East Africa, and a lot of it is going into physical infrastructure.
Energy. Mining. Transport.
The real moat has always been data, distribution and networks. Code used to be one too, but times have changed.
In this age, when the technology itself becomes the moat, you’re probably building something genuinely 0→1.
Otherwise, a lot of tech (code) is commoditized at this point.
When building infrastructure in emerging markets, what comes first:
Infrastructure that creates demand, or demand that justifies infrastructure?

Being smart and intelligent has nothing to do with speaking English, imitating values, or dressing like Hollywood .
As the matter of fact even being civilized and developed.
Carrying my 🇹🇿 values wherever I go.
Kindness, respect and discipline.

Something which has been normalized and it’s not normal, not passing down our craftsmanship.😏☹️
I used to pay $40/month for tools like Tally just to collect forms from users.
Now I can vibe code the same thing in 20 mins with Claude, throw it on Railway with a Postgres DB and call it a day.
My Railway bill isn't even going to come close to $40/month.
I wonder how many SaaS businesses are about to have this problem.

They have been recently a regular influx of consultants or companies from abroad who market themselves as experts in Africa.
Most of them propose top down solutions that lack local realities.
If we ain’t careful w’ll have unsustainable development projects paid by our expenses
We talk a lot about how much money African startups are raising.
But not all money is the same.
Equity and debt create different incentives, different risks, and different outcomes for founders.
My latest piece for Stories We Tell explores this.
As promised, the follow up article is uploaded:
"Not All Money Is the Same" by @amschelfi
