In 1780, while serving as an American diplomat in Europe during the Revolutionary War, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife Abigail about the kind of education he hoped future generations would enjoy. Adams believed that his generation had a responsibility to secure political freedom so that their children could devote themselves to mathematics and philosophy. The American Founders did not see education simply as preparation for employment, but as something that made a richer and more civilized life possible. As Adams wrote: “I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.” — John Adams, letter to Abigail Adams, May 12, 1780

Reading wasn’t always something Malcolm loved. He had to work at it. That experience is a big part of why we do what we do today. Becoming a reader doesn’t happen overnight. Sometimes it starts with one book, someone who believes in you and the decision to keep trying.

One of the most viral accounts on X right now is a book club. The world is healing.
These books will give you a better education than almost any school curriculum in the West today. In our academic system, you can go from Pre-K to PhD without reading a word of Homer, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Virgil, Augustine, Dante, or Milton. We set up the Athenaeum Book Club to fight back. If schools and universities won't teach the Great Books, we must form our own reading circles. These are some of the texts we've read together, or will cover soon. Join our reading group to study the great works in dialogue with others. We are just starting The Brothers Karamazov. If you've been on the fence about joining our group, now's the time. You do NOT want to miss this. We're reading Brothers K. over the next 6 weeks. The next discussion is on August 18th. Take out a paid subscription if you'd like to support us and join the discussions directly — it makes a huge difference to the time and resources we can dedicate. You'll get: - Live book club discussions (biweekly) - Access to our incredible community chat - Essays to guide you through the Great Books - All past recordings, essays, and podcasts - Ability to vote on what we read next athenaeumbooks.com/welcome See you inside!

With mass literacy under attack, I worry that the drive to learn new things is dying with it. I don’t want to live in a world where people’s interests are determined solely by algorithms. Read widely, explore libraries, eagerly seek out music, books & films you’d never heard of.

The single best thing you can do for your child's mental health and success in life is to limit their screens and delay giving them phones. Yes, they'll complain of boredom. But they will become adults who are literate, socially capable and emotionally well-adjusted.
People who don't think phones/social media are having a deleterious effect on developing brains -- what's the alternative explanation for this? Did every country put lead in the water at the same time?

Thank you to Leadership Bartlett and the Bartlett Public Library for donating a copy of this year’s class project, Robbie Raccoon’s Bartlett Adventure, to our @BartlettSchools libraries. It’s a wonderful Bartlett keepsake to share with all of our students!

I heard someone say yesterday that early schools were designed by robber barons to keep kids just literate enough to work in the mines, and now billionaire industrialists are pushing tech that makes kids illiterate. We have come full circle.

Students don’t need chromebooks and AI tutors, they need Shakespeare and Jane Austen and the Greek myths, they need the Arthurian Legends and the Arabian Nights, they need constant exposure to nature, fairytales, folklore, poetry and beauty.

The surest path to finding joy is to take an interest in things. Study history, learn the names of plants & birds, get to know those around you. We reach maturity by being drawn out of ourselves and into a vibrant fascination with the world. And that is a kind of love.
