why software engineers have this low self esteem?
It's very easy to disprove this. Look at AI lab engineering outputs! They hire top talent, and have unlimited tokens + unreleased powerful models.
Can you see impressive software built by them? By impressive I mean:
- low RAM / cpu usage
- good UI UX
- no blatant bugs
- minimal downtime
- obviously no electron
... why isn't this obvious?
the coding agent haters are getting dunning-kruger'd so hard right now
do you really think that your engineering ability is better than the models at this point?
it is very very likely that fable is better than you in every branch of software
it has been trained on all the code of the internet, it knows almost every trick in the book, all the design patterns of every domain, every single low-level detail, every bit-twiddling hack, it's read every single blog post from every cracked engineer that ever existed
do you really think you can beat it? do you really think you can be more creative than it?
unless you are 99th percentile expert in some niche domain of software, it simply is not possible. sorry.

remember kids to make a benchmark that will not embarrass yourself in front of everyone in tech community you have to make sure that:
1. you provide the same inputs
2. validate both programs produce the same outputs
3. make sure that you are not providing the options that artificially slow down your oponnent

Customer support costs are trending to zero due to AI
Not because it's automating it all, but because your vibe-coded slop has no customers to support

I hadn't seen this one before - someone on reddit posted this fantastic trick for creating shell "runnable" C files
Software is as diverse as the users are. For some software reading the code and modifying it IS part of the UX. Because the user is a programmer. For such software clarity and simplicity of the code is crucial because it's the UI. Good example are TempleOS and st but there's more

Sustained open source is not about "can you create something crazy with an LLM" but how is the project maintained longer term. Who is the person behind the project, are they reasonable people, are they responding to issues in a timely fashion, making sane decisions. Stewardship.

I think every time AI can do something equally good or better than humans it stops being valuable or special
Marketing videos used to take lots of work of editing and motion graphics and a big budget
Now with Opus 5.5 etc it costs $0 to make one as good or better
That means ANYONE can make a marketing video now, so the timeline gets flooded with these videos (as you see happening now) and people stop caring about them, stop watching them and they stop grabbing attention
The response then to still grab attention is be different and that probably means IRL marketing videos that are original and unique and maybe personal
It's the grim reaper meme where AI keeps commoditizing another media format and bringing the cost down to close to $0
It already did so for graphic design (2023), last year with Nano Banana for photography (2025), this year with Seedance 2.5 it did it for video (2026) and this and next year motion graphics

This is so untrue it hurts. You can only possibly have this position if you don't measure
Replying to @RyanCarniato
I should link my 2022 article talking about this. The challenge isn't the capabilities of the language but the value of having the same runtime across both sides for the handoff. There are possible other off-ramps, but right now we are stuck.
