Keeping your profit dollars isn't the same thing as keeping your margin.
Say price is $10 and cost is $5. That's a 50% gross margin.
Costs go up $1, so the price goes up $1.
The $5 of profit is still there on every sale, but $5 out of $11 is a 45% gross margin.
Do it once and it feels harmless.
I've watched owners do it year after year until they dollar-for-dollar themselves out of a business.
The fix is a price increase that protects the percentage, not the dollar, because margin is where the business gets funded.
Tough decisions in a business are easily avoided when everything is running smoothly. But, limited time and resources helps to create focus, drive out hesitation, and produce action.
Setting an artificial deadline or limiting the scope of a project can create clarity as to what is truly important.
What would it look like if all your business decisions were made based on the long-term benefits vs. short-term returns?

Funny thing:
OpenAI announced Dots, their new AI assistant to compete with Muse and GrokBot
Then X AI made dot.com (which is a funny domain to say) point to the GrokBot marketing page.
(also three letter domains are a flex)
“Often those ideas that we were most confident in and sure that would succeed, were the ones that ended up not being successful. The ones that did work out were not necessarily things that we saw coming, but we kept our eyes open and realized the opportunities as we found them.”
Launched new uproute.com this week. Always refreshing to get your own website aligned with the work that we do!

A mistake most contractors make? Viewing marketing as a campaign instead of a long-term asset.
Every dollar is expected to produce an immediate phone call or booked job.
Yes, that's important, but it causes you to overlook the opportunities that compound over time.
Our advertising team is killing it @dougsirkoch.
Signed new hardscape/landscape client
Ran ad campaigns for 7 months
$1,100,000 in quoted jobs
$199,231 of jobs won
All from less than $15k of ad spend
And that's worst case scenario as these are only directly attributable leads.
Made the jump to Omarchy. Did a dual boot to test it… not going back! Never thought I would bother with Linux, as I prefer when things “just work.” But it does. And not only that, it’s a better experience. Thanks @dhh.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re going to make the prophecy of The Year of Linux on the Desktop come true. All the pieces are now in place. Time to go all in! omarchy.org/news/2026/08/oma…
Top line revenue does not matter as much as you think, it’s just an easy number to see. What does matter is how it tracks against the goal for the month, and how it tracks year-to-date compared to the goal.
Net profit margin. This number does not get the focus it deserves. It tells you if the business model financially works. If there is something broken in the model, it will show up in this number. If the business is working, it will show up in this number.

Reminder that websites must be built right and also maintained for security. WordPress can be done right. But it is also easy to leave open to security issues. It definitely must be maintained.

There are times WordPress is the right option. But more often commercially built and maintained software is the better choice. Better support. Better security. Less issues.
