Let’s talk about gold...
Are you thinking about gold as a store of value? That’s probably about right.
Since 2009, gold has basically been flat versus the Fed’s balance sheet, meaning gold is preserving your purchasing power – but that’s about it. Gold is not gaining – it’s just holding.
But here’s where it gets interesting: there’s also a whole group of people – the gold bugs – who view gold as an investment. And that’s where I think they’re getting it wrong…
If you’re looking at gold as an investment, then at some point, you’ve got to assess its return on investment (ROI), just like you would with anything else in your portfolio.
Since the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, in what @RaoulGMI and I call the era of The Everything Code, central banks have been systematically debasing currencies to avoid a GDP doom loop caused by declining demographics and falling productivity growth.
Essentially, government debt growth is offsetting the entire demographic decline which the Fed then monetizes. Immigration factors into this equation too, but that’s a story for another time.
Once you grasp this, you understand everything about the current macro environment. And this shift has completely changed the rules of the game, setting a much higher bar for your portfolio.
The new reality?
Your hurdle rate is around 10% per year – just to preserve your purchasing power!
So if your investment portfolio isn’t making at least 10% a year, you’re actually losing money in real terms.
60/40 is dead.
And what about gold?
Gold has made you money since 2009, but it hasn’t made you any richer.
This is what I call a "nominal illusion."
In nominal terms, you’re up, but in real terms – adjusted for current debasement trends – you’re only breaking even.
Let me help put this into perspective for you:
This year has been fantastic for gold historically – it’s the best year since 2010. But here’s the punchline: even with that strong performance, gold has underperformed Bitcoin by 96% year-to-date. And mind you, Bitcoin traded sideways for eight months this year!
Zoom out even further, and gold is down a staggering 99.99% versus Bitcoin since the start of 2012…
Sure, Bitcoin is volatile – that’s a given, and you need to approach it with the right mindset and strategy.
Our rules for engagement?
No leverage
No FOMO
Top 3 to 5 assets as main bag
Self-custody (or multi-sig) with good wallet hygiene
Only trade a small degen bag <10%
HODL over a longer time horizon
Zoom out and remove the noise
Expect 35% pullbacks frequently
BTFD if you can
The big picture?
Bitcoin is accumulating purchasing power faster than any asset in human history – about 8x faster than the next fastest horse in the race, which are tech stocks.
It’s a stark reminder: outside of crypto and tech stocks, nothing else is helping you build purchasing power. Even large-cap equities like the S&P 500 are barely breaking even, while everything else is outright loss-making versus the 10% global debasement trend.
Think carefully about what that means, because it’s an incredibly important concept to your future self…

Gary Gensler wants to kill your NFTs
Calling them securities in an attack on crypto artists.
Starting today, we fight back.
I’m teaming up with @beeple, @UNFKearth and YOU to deliver 100,000 signatures to the SEC, demanding they keep their hands off our JPEGs
And Beeple will immortalize it in an Everyday 🖼️
🫵 STAND 4 ARTISTS HERE: UNFK.com/action 🫵
## BACKGROUND - AN ASSAULT ON CRYPTO ART ##
Since 2016, creatives around the world have made a living selling original art via NFTs.
On Aug. 28, 2024, Gensler sent a Wells notice to @opensea saying he views these artworks as securities.
teapaw.org/dfinzer/status/1828791…
If Gary isn’t stopped, thousands of artists who make a living from NFTs will no longer be able to support their families.
That includes artists you and I love and support. It may even include you.
Mark my words: If Gary gets what he wants, digital art ends as we know it.
And if NFTs are securities, then what's next? Beanie Babies? Baseball cards?
The funny thing is, only a short while ago, Gary said most tokens were not securities.
Now, he carries the water for corrupt bankers and politicians threatened by crypto's rise.
And with this latest action against NFTs, he is doubling down against crypto art.
We speak for all when we say: we are fed up.
Now, we fight.
Here’s the game plan and how YOU can help...
THE CAMPAIGN:
1) Sign the "NFTs are not securities" petition, to let them know we’re ready for a fight
Do it anon or doxed. We’re gathering 100,000 signatures to demand the SEC stop the investigation into OpenSea, and make it clear NFTs are NOT securities.
2) Put Gary in the hot seat by reporting him to the anonymous SEC Employee hotline
We think it's time to report Gary to HR once and for all.
You can make a 100% anonymous complaint against Gary on the petition page we've made
Write how you feel about Gary (can be funny or serious, but CAN'T use violent or racist language).
UNFK will have the funniest complaints read in Gary's voice at his office in DC (yes, you read that right)
And in this fight for freedom of arts, we’re deploying the most potent weapon we have:
Art itself.
The gran maestro @beeple will be monitoring the complaints you write to Gary Gensler.
And has offered to put the funniest into an Everyday.
That’s right… your words could be immortalized… as we call out Gary for harassing hardworking artists.
3) Share this post and campaign to spread the word
Once you’re done, come back here and blast this post to EVERYONE.
Actually, do it right now.
Repost it. Comment. Text it to your grandma.
Let’s take the fight to Gary Gensler and the SEC.
Scroll up, sign the petition now, and let’s get to work.
OpenSea has received a Wells notice from the SEC threatening to sue us because they believe NFTs on our platform are securities.
We're shocked the SEC would make such a sweeping move against creators and artists. But we're ready to stand up and fight.
Cryptocurrencies have long been in the crosshairs of the SEC, and companies like @coinbase, @Uniswap, @RobinhoodApp, @krakenfx, and @Consensys have been fighting against the SEC's single-track approach of "regulation by enforcement."
But this is a move into uncharted territory. By targeting NFTs, the SEC would stifle innovation on an even broader scale: hundreds of thousands of online artists and creatives are at risk, and many do not have the resources to defend themselves.
NFTs are fundamentally creative goods: art, collectibles, video game items, domain names, event tickets, and more.
We should not regulate digital art in the same way we regulate collateralized debt obligations.
As we've built OpenSea, we've heard so many stories about the impact of NFTs on people’s lives, including:
• Student artists finding full-time careers in selling their digital art
• Indie game developers instantly enabling open markets for their in-game items, without having to build marketplaces from scratch
• Passionate collectors from different corners of the world joining new communities, all centered around shared digital ownership
It would be a terrible outcome if creators stopped making digital art because of regulatory saber-rattling. Take, for example, the suit filed against the SEC by the musician @songadaymann and conceptual artist @brianlfrye, which describes their fear that the sale of their art and music could be deemed unregistered securities offerings.
In addition to standing our own ground, we're pledging $5M to help cover legal fees for NFT creators and devs that receive a Wells notice. Every creator, big or small, should be able to innovate without fear.
I hope the SEC will come to its senses sooner rather than later, and that they'll listen with an open mind.
Until then, we'll stand up and fight for our industry.
Onwards 🌊⛵️
