A drought hit Tarangire in Tanzania in 1993 and killed 16 of the park's 81 elephant calves in nine months. Normally about two in a hundred die in a year.
The losses were not spread evenly. Some family groups walked out of the park and went looking for water elsewhere. One clan stayed. The clans that left lost far fewer calves.
The difference was who was leading. Elephant families are run by the oldest female, and the older she is, the better the family does. The last comparable drought in that region had been in the 1960s, thirty years earlier. The matriarchs old enough to remember it were the ones who left.
Researchers at Amboseli in Kenya tested this directly. They played lion roars to elephant families and watched. Male lions are about half again the size of females, and they are the real danger to a calf. Families with a matriarch in her sixties heard the difference at once, bunched, and charged the sound. Younger leaders treated a male roar like a female one and mostly ignored it.
She has heard lions hundreds of times. She has walked past herders, survived poaching years, been through droughts that killed other families' calves. Nobody taught her any of it. None of it is written down.
Which is why poaching a matriarch costs more than one elephant. Her tusks are the biggest, and she steps forward when the family is threatened, so she is the one who gets shot. Killing her removes the decision-maker and thirty years of map in the same moment. Leadership passes to the next oldest, usually a daughter, who inherits the position without inheriting anything that made it work.
Families in heavily poached populations have been documented breaking apart afterward, making worse choices about where to go, staying tighter to each other and getting less food.
Elephants have been recorded standing over a dead matriarch, touching her body with their trunks, returning to the spot for weeks afterward. Whatever that is, they do it for her and not for others.
She is old and past calving and she is the reason the rest of them are alive. Every year she keeps going, the family keeps a little more of what she knows.

Meet Prof. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay, the IISER Kolkata chemist who mentored India's Chemistry Olympiad team to its best-ever finish this July.
He studied at the University of Burdwan for his bachelor's, then IIT Kanpur for his master's, before earning his PhD under Prof. Reginald Mitchell at the University of Victoria in Canada. He went on to postdoc with Prof. Ron Breslow at Columbia University and spent a year at Cambridge under Prof. Florian Hollfelder before joining IISER Kolkata as an Assistant Professor.
Since then, he's picked up 4 Best Teacher Awards from IISER Kolkata's own student community, become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and earned an Honorary Membership of the American Chemical Society.
This July, as Head Mentor, he guided India's 4-student team through the 58th IChO in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. All 4 came home with gold. India tied for Rank 1 with China and Vietnam, its best result in 27 appearances at the competition.
Mentor who spent 27 years building the platform his students needed just 5 days in Tashkent to stand on.
Another Golden Sweep by India as our Chemistry team bags 4 Gold medals securing Rank #1 (jointly with China, Vietnam, and Individual Participant (Russia)) at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad, Uzbekistan (icho2026.uz).

If a salaried person wants to build a software application or digital services agency, the entry barrier is virtually zero.
They just need a laptop and an internet connection.
But if the same person wants to start manufacturing...
They need:
• Land
• Factory space
• Expensive machinery
• 6-12 months of approvals
• Huge upfront capital
My suggestion to the Government of India:
Build Manufacturing Parks for first-time entrepreneurs.
Instead of selling 10-acre plots, create buildings with 500-1,000 sq. ft. ready-to-use factory units.
Every unit should come with:
• 3-phase electricity already connected
• Pollution & fire approvals already cleared
• Shared CNC machines, injection moulding, testing labs & warehouses
• Common logistics and loading docks
• Month-to-month rentals instead of land purchases
• Single online portal to book a unit within 7 days
Let engineers keep their jobs while testing manufacturing on a small scale.
We built co-working spaces for software.
It's time we built co-factories for manufacturing.

Players who managed to average >= 35 in a stretch of 50 consecutive test matches and 2 wickets per match. The span here mentions the time period of these games. Sobers, Imran and Kallis ain't surprising at all.
What I hope is the day, Ravindra Jadeja decides to retire from red ball cricket, Indian cricket and fans respect him the way, England has done for Ben Stokes.

Finally went to Avijit Sarkar’s house, 5 years after he was lynched during post poll violence in 2021.
Even today, his brother runs a shelter for rescued strays.
He has built a little memorial to the murdered puppies right next to Avijit’s memorial.
3 murdered puppies were laid to rest under a Tulsi plant.
Bishwajeet told us how Avijit’s killers’ family still lives next door to them, but they never hurt them even when BJP came to power.
Because violence is NOT ‘political culture of Bengal’

honestly you can only consume brainrot endlessly. good content—books, articles, some film & TV—automatically makes you want to stop, think, reflect and digest before consuming more. it really is like the difference between junk food and nutritious food but for the brain

Dear Indians,
This has been just 2-3 days of taking down drones by Army’s air defence. And that also just a few hundreds.
Please don’t start with and worry - they will deplete our ammunition.
Stable armies like ours cater for months of operations. There are multiple, MULTIPLE layers of ammunition stores and reserves.
We are pretty rich country. We are not Pakistan. We can buy them by shiploads if we need to. Which there is no need in foreseeable future.
Please don’t panic. Our ammo isn’t planned for weekend fireworks for two days. It’s meant to fight and sustain a war.
We have enough 👍

Richard Mille watches, like the one Hardik Pandya was wearing, are so expensive because they combine cutting-edge materials (like titanium and carbon fiber), intricate engineering, and highly complex movements that require exceptional craftsmanship. Additionally, their exclusivity—due to limited production runs—and their status as a luxury symbol drive up both demand and price, making them a statement of wealth and innovation.

Beyond affordability, a major factor for a growing subset of Indians to avoid 'outside' food is a lack of trust about the quality of ingredients and processes used to create the final product, and its potential negative impact on health. If that trust gap can be bridged, then a lot many more folks with decent sized wallets would be happy to explore outside food more often.
