Antyodaya means the uplift of the person who comes last. In the communities where we work, that person is often a girl. At Apne Aap, we begin with her. Our ten assets (a safe place, an education, an identity, a livelihood and friends who stand beside her)
On Gandhi's birth anniversary, we gathered at Asia Society to honour people who stand with the Last Girl.
Apne Aap is informed by two Gandhian principles. Ahimsa means nonviolence: challenging the violence of buying and selling another human being.
Tonight, we come together for the Last Girl.

Freedom should reach the Last Girl, too.
In 2022, Gloria Steinem,Ruchira Gupta and Ruby Sales took part in a keynote conversation at the Last Girl Awards. That year’s gathering marked 75 years of India’s independence and focused on grassroots action against child sex trafficking.
As we prepare for our tenth annual awards, we keep asking what freedom means in a girl’s daily life: the chance to learn, to be safe and to shape her own future. These questions connect our gatherings to the work that continues throughout the year.
