Today we're unveiling Trillium Labs @trillium_labs, a new non-profit to foster the open science of frontier AI. We're building open post-training recipes and will expand into open infra to study RSI, reward-hacking, multi-agent systems, and whatever comes next. We're built around the theory of change that you need more eyes to solve hard technical problems. We have faith in the scientific methods and communities that humanity has built, and worry that AI is becoming too closed to utilize them. Trilliums are wildflowers that bloom briefly in the spring, before the forest canopies fill out. Though they are small, they lay the foundation for the cycles of growth and nourishment through the rest of the year. At Trillium Labs, the recipes will be the slow nutrients for the seasons and the model releases will be the blooms. Building an institution dedicated to this is needed because, much as nature’s trilliums are slow to expand and grow, the open-ecosystem needs time and dedicated resources to catch up. I co-founded with with a long-time friend and collaborator Tom Zick (@thesezickbeats). We're hiring (full time + student collabs/interns), we're fundraising, and we're looking for compute. Please get in touch if you're interested in helping out. Offices based in the Bay Area and Cambridge MA, remote okay. I’m in the Bay Area until for The Curve and COLM to connect with people who are interested. We’re thankful to have initial support from Halcyon Futures and Schmidt Sciences with more funding en route to enable our ambitions of scaling. Our advisors @Thom_Wolf, @HannaHajishirzi, @gneubig and @ctnzr have been instrumental to building the ecosystem that exists today, and I’m stoked to get to keep working with them.

seen/heard >5 reactions to deepseek4 "data is all that matters" claim with "welp research is over" but that is a terrible take during the old days (2016-21ish), if you were hillclimbing - in most cases you had a few knobs and levers for improving the model: (1) some architecture decisions, (2) some loss fn/learning signal differences, (3) some training algorithm differences. you really had to be creative to turn intuition into inductive biases which meaningfully affected the outcome (or come up with posthoc explanations for why your human-guided neural architecture search worked) now, the data is your lever for improving the model and the behavior. each token is a knob, and you can scale to thousands or even trillions. each reward function. if you want to influence the model behavior through inductive biases - there are levers everywhere for those with eyes to see really data has always been the key lever for model improvement and progress in the field (eg imagenet did way more for vision than rcnn) but it was a lever that was impossible to move (pay mturkers to annotate the right data) and took time money and energy now, for the same cost - you can apply an army of agents and spend millions of tokens of compute to calculate the optimal reward signal for each token of training. what is stopping you from improving performance except better research ideas and compute/time (which can be reduced with better research ideas) the surface area for research has only increased, eg the architecture of a data factory is so much more interesting / offers more opportunities for research than a model architecture. the age of research is only beginning

A very exciting day for open-source AI! We're releasing our biggest open source model yet -- OLMo 2 32B -- and it beats the latest GPT 3.5, GPT 4o mini, and leading open weight models like Qwen and Mistral. As usual, all data, weights, code, etc. are available. For a long time, people have asked for an truly open-source version of ChatGPT and we finally have it. This is multiple years coming into efforts following the release of ChatGPT and builds on the efforts of so many at both Ai2 and in the broader open AI ecosystem. With just a bit more progress everyone can pretrain, midtrain, post-train, whatever they need to get a GPT 4 class model in their class. This is a major shift in how open-source AI can grow into real applications. Oh yeah, it's also Apache 2 as always, so happy to make things that are simple to use. I did NOT expect to be undercutting OpenAI's offerings this year but here we are :D

The world's first instruction-following reranker, which is SOTA on leading benchmarks like BEIR, powers our platform for building specialized RAG agents. Hear from our team about why and how we built it.
AI struggles with messy, conflicting, ever-changing data. Today's AI ranking methods can't prioritize clearly, because they lack human guidance. Introducing the world's first instruction-following, SOTA reranker! Give our reranker instructions to control exactly how it ranks: • “Prioritize recent documents” • “Prefer PDFs over other sources” • “The boss is always right” Can’t wait to see what people build with it!

Last week, we announced the general availability of the Contextual AI Platform, designed to make it fast and easy to launch specialized RAG agents into production. This means that enterprises can tackle more advanced AI use cases with confidence, worrying less about building and maintaining their RAG infrastructure. In fact, our platform performs better out-of-the-box on RAG retrieval accuracy than any other vendor out there. We are defining the state of the art for enterprise AI. 🧵 1/5

Contextual's RAG Agents already outperform traditional RAG systems. But we know that accuracy is crucial for critical enterprise workflows. With the Contextual AI Platform, you just tell us about your specific task and goal, and we'll deliver specialized RAG agents, which have shown over 15% greater accuracy in customer evals. contextual.ai/blog/contextua…
Replying to @ContextualAI
With additional specialization, we can do even better. In real customer workloads, we achieved 15% accuracy improvements on top of existing SOTA results, giving our customers the confidence to move mission-critical use cases into production, where accuracy at scale is paramount.

This is a pretty cool development of RAG technologies: * Built on Llama 3.3, so prolly the new 70B model (nice not all API models) * Feels like Perplexity + agents / reasoning, while more modular and controllable for business (I wasn't 100% sure where Contextuals knowledge store is) * love to see the people who coined the term RAG pushing it to limits
Today, we’re excited to announce the general availability of the Contextual AI Platform. This is the first enterprise platform designed for building specialized RAG agents to support expert knowledge work. What is a specialized RAG agent? First, a general-purpose AI agent is one designed to automate simple daily tasks like scheduling a meeting or responding to an email. On the other hand, a specialized RAG agent is one designed to augment subject-matter experts performing complex domain-specific work. The Contextual AI Platform allows you to create these agents easily and achieve SOTA accuracy right out of the box. Check out what the Contextual AI Platform can do.
