In a study published today in Nature, researchers identified hundreds of new microexons—short gene segments that appear to play a key role in autism and other neurological conditions—and developed a machine learning approach to predict the impact of autism-associated genetic variants on the regulation of these segments. #autismgenetics medicalxpress.com/news/2026-…

A new study reveals that the wide variety of sensory experiences reported by autistic individuals corresponds to distinct patterns of information exchange in the brain. Researchers found that specific functional connections between cortical and subcortical brain regions can predict an autistic child’s sensory profile. psypost.org/brain-connectivi…

Tune in tomorrow for our free webinar, "The Immune System in Autism". This lecture will cover immune system dysregulation in individuals with autism and associations between autism severity and immune function. Autism is associated with a wide spectrum of atypical immune functions involving autophagy, innate immune activation, NK, T-cell and B-cell responses, and tolerance. At the same time, autism is associated with alteration of a variety of immune-related factors, including oxidative stress, phase-II metabolism, zinc metabolism, heavy metal metabolism, and the gut microbiome. Gut microbial metabolites, in particular, serve as effective biomarkers for autism, perhaps providing a starting point for understanding common factors underlying the spectrum disorder. In the study, one group participated in therapeutic horseback riding. Another completed horse-themed barn activities using a life-sized stuffed toy horse. The third group was placed on a waitlist and received neither activity during the study period. Children who participated in therapeutic horseback riding showed significantly greater improvement in hyperactivity than those in either comparison group. health.yahoo.com/conditions/…

America’s public education system offers some of the world's best services and protections for students with disabilities, guaranteed by federal law. But more parents are abandoning their rights to those services. They say public schools are failing their kids and they’re better off trying to educate them at home. apnews.com/projects/homescho…

, Tune in tomorrow for our free webinar, "Decoding Face Processing in Autism," presented by Jason W. Griffin, PhD This talk presents novel approaches to analyzing eye-tracking and EEG data that have strong potential to advance our understanding of social perception in autism. These methods can provide intermediate mechanisms for behavioral change over time and may improve sensitivity to intervention-related change. Register: autism.org/webinar/decoding-…

Four conditions -- maternal overweight and obesity, depression, asthma, and pregnancy complications -- show racial and ethnic differences in the magnitude of their association with autism. All of these conditions had stronger associations with autism in white mothers than Black, Hispanic, or Asian and Pacific Islander mothers. #autismrisk #pregnancy #mentalhealth #obesity medpagetoday.com/neurology/a…

autism.org/donating-daf/ Today is Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Day! DAF Day is a new kind of giving day that reframes how DAFs are used and who uses them. ARI is included in a collaborative group of nonprofits, fundraising platforms, and DAF providers encouraging impactful use of nearly $230 billion in DAF accounts that is earmarked for giving. If you already have a Donor-Advised Fund, it’s a powerful tool to support organizations like the Autism Research Institute while also benefiting from an income tax deduction.

Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa reversed certain behavioral symptoms in a mouse model of autism by fixing a problem in the brain's blood vessels. Their findings, published in Neuron, suggest a promising new treatment target for these symptoms. #neurology #mousemodel #autismresearch medicalxpress.com/news/2026-…

Neurodivergent people, particularly those with autism or ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), may be more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D) at younger ages. An analysis of patient data found a particularly high prevalence of neurodiversity among people diagnosed with T2D before age 20. medicalxpress.com/news/2026-…
