Free sunlight does not mean cost-free electricity. Distributed energy still needs maintenance, replacement reserves and reliable revenue collection. That operating model matters as much as installing the asset.
For over a century, energy meant buying fuel—over and over. Litres. Tonnes. Cubic metres. The model ran on endless consumption. Solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, batteries, and EVs change that. Build the infrastructure once, then harvest what flows for free—sunlight, wind, water, earth's heat. Every new renewable asset reduces future fuel demand instead of feeding it. That's the disruption. Not better tech. A business model that erodes its own customer base. Fossil fuels aren't just fighting cleaner energy—they're fighting irrelevance.

Cheaper cells are only part of the storage story. For distributed solar, the useful measure is reliable energy delivered over the battery's life. Metered output, losses and downtime should sit alongside the purchase price.
Consumer electronics like smartphones drove down battery costs for EVs to reach mass market – which in turn – "opened up a new driver of grid batteries", says Kingsmill Bond at The Energy Revolution Podcast with Sulaiman Ilyas-Jarrett open.spotify.com/episode/1tx…

Scaling renewables also means making small projects easier to finance. Verifiable generation records and transparent payments can help distributed solar and batteries turn physical output into dependable cash flow.
Electrifying end-uses will require an unprecedented expansion of #renewable electricity. Today’s installed renewable power capacity of 5.2 terawatts (TW) would have to grow to 38.2 TW by 2050, driven by a significant increase in investment👇 irena.org/Publications/2026/…

More EVs make distributed clean power and storage even more important. Can charging demand follow renewable supply, with verifiable records of where the electricity comes from?
Full-EV Surge! Fifteen countries had full-electric vehicles (BEV) at 30% or higher of auto sales for period of 6-months ending in August 2026! Another 10 were at 20% BEV or higher! Those numbers do NOT include Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV). ember-energy.org/latest-insi…

Energy capacity = economic capacity, in one chart There are no low electricity, rich countries
"Energy Capacity = Economic Capacity" Former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger on why America's power grid is the ceiling on growth: "We went through 10 to 15 years where essentially I was taking coal offline at the rate I was adding renewables, and essentially the nation was flatlined in terms of overall energy capacity." "So essentially our economic capacity as a nation, flat for fifteen years." "Even with that, we've gone to maybe increasing our national energy capacity 4% per year. Going from essentially zero to one." "Nuclear as base load is a fabulous thing that we want to go build more of. Unfortunately all of our renewables have deep dependencies in China." "Energy capacity somewhat dampens how euphoric we can get on AI. Why build a new data center and buy the million GPUs if I can't power them?" @PGelsinger @RaghuRaghuram @appenz

Energy capacity = economic capacity. Pat Gelsinger is right: AI’s ceiling isn’t just chips. It’s power. The grid won’t scale at AI speed. Distributed solar, verifiable generation, and programmable energy settlement can. Energy has to become native to the internet.

Solar is already the only source scaling at the volumes AI will need — 43 GW of the 86 GW the US grid plans to add this year. The hard part isn’t building panels. It’s making that generation verifiable, programmable, and settleable for compute. That’s the layer we’re building.
The US grid plans to add 86 gigawatts this year. Here's where it's coming from: - Solar: 43.4 GW - Batteries: 24.3 GW - Wind: 11.8 GW - Gas: 6.3 GW - New nuclear: 0 GW The AI labs are planning for hundreds of gigawatts. Solar is the one source already produced at that scale, and most of it is made in China. "Scaling firm power that isn't gas is much more complicated. Uprates and restarts can squeeze a little more from the existing nuclear fleet, but the real upside is new reactors." a16z's @rmcentush on how America powers the next wave of growth: a16z.news/p/why-texas-is-mak…

Great to see Arc growing across Africa. Arkreen’s eCandle is already using USDC on Arc for pay-as-you-go solar in Nigeria — scan, pay, and the light turns on. Real energy, settled onchain. That’s how USDC and Arc can help light Africa⚡️⚡️
The continent of Africa is lighting up @arc!!!!!!!! We got the receipts ♥️ and yes this is just a partial view....too big to fit on screen

Electricity wasn’t a household bill. Then it was. Compute is next. Only ~2.2% of US households pay for AI today. The other 98% haven’t started. Agents and home inference will turn compute into a monthly utility—not a luxury. The open question is the power behind that bill. Every kWh a model consumes has to be metered, flexible, and settleable. Stranded rooftop solar shouldn’t be curtailed—it should become verifiable compute at the source. Energy on-chain. Compute as a household utility.
98% of US households aren't paying for AI yet More charts in State of Markets II: a16z.news/p/state-of-markets…

Incumbents always underestimate exponential curves until the ceiling becomes a speed bump. Same pattern in EVs, crypto, and now AI energy demand.
I love this chart. In 1993 the German electricity companies said renewables could never supply more than 4% of the country's power... that was the ceiling. Last year they supplied 55.9%. Fourteen times the ceiling. It's the psychology of incumbents meeting exponential change. They extrapolate from the flat part of the curve, and the ceiling turns out to be a speed bump. Same story in EVs, in crypto, in AI... Impossible, then inevitable.

Ocean-powered EV charging is a good example of local generation meeting flexible demand. The next step is verifiable interval data: when energy was produced, when vehicles charged, what grid demand was avoided, and how consistently the system performed.
Another #renewable first for Scotland. Cars are now being charged by the power of the ocean. We have so many solutions. Implement them. #ActOnClimate #ClimateCrisis #Climate #energy #renewableenergy #greennewdeal
