ALT In the days immediately following Hinata's departure, Sakusa had to come to terms with the failure of his family plan, and with the impending emotional collapse of Miya Atsumu. He watched him closely, as he would watch a tower of cards hovering in balance, threatening to crumble at any moment, yet never completely collapsing. He waited a couple of days before facing him and ask: «Why? Why did you break up with him? » Atsumu shifted on the couch, so he would face the seatback and not his friend. He hugged Shovo's pillow, still smelling of him «Because I love him. » «Breaking up with him makes no sense at all, if you love him. » Sakusa observed, settling on the armchair in front of him. «Do ya know why caged birds sing, Omi-omi? » Atsumu asked, without turning. «No, and I don't think you do. » Sakusa challenged him, but Atsumu did not take the bait.

ALT «A little bird sings ta find its fellows, or ta be aware of how far away things are. They’re tiny things, so their eyes don’t work too well. Vibrations are their way of figure out how ta fly without bumping into trees. » Atsumu, sudden ornithologist, explained. «The caged little bird sings even if it doesn’t have ta figure out anything. It’s all alone in its cage, yet still sings, because that’s its second instinct. If it can’t fly, at least sings. » he went on «Crows are very smart birds, who don’t sing. They scream, ta warn ya they’re coming. They like shiny things and have a big beak, big claws. Very beautiful birds, if ya think about it. » he sighs «Have ya ever seen a caged crow, Sakusa? » Then, Sakusa rolled his eyes, because he had more or less figured out where Atsumu was going with that. «In some drawings. »

ALT «Ya need some big fucking cages to contain crows, because they're such big birds. Japan isn't a cage big enough for crow Shoyo. » he hugged the pillow more «and I don't want ta know what a caged crow sings like. I don't want ta be the reason why the crow sings. » he concluded. «Hinata is not a crow. » Sakusa argued «Not anymore. He's a jackal. Like you and me. And jackals stay in small packs, like ours. » «I'm a fox.» Atsumu corrected him «Born a fox, will die a fox, consecrated to Inari okami and all that. It doesn't matter what fucking other dog I'm trying to be, I'm a fox.»

ALT «You are a person. A jerk, to be specific. Like Shovo isn't a crow, but a person. Like I am a person. Like Bokuto, and everyone else, because we are not the fucking animals of our teams, so be serious for once and actually tell me why did you break up with him.» there, he lost his patience. Atsumu shrugged. «He deserves someone who supports him into whatever he wants ta do and helps him ta choose what's better fer him. Do ya really think that, if I had asked him ta stay, he would have? » he didn't give Sakusa enough time to come up with a plausible excuse as to why Hinata would choose to stay «I broke my heart myself, so he wouldn't have ta do it. Because I love him. That's it.»
